Caterpillar® D9R
Track-Type Tractor

3408E Engine Update

The D9R Track-Type Tractor features

the 3408E engine with Hydraulically
actuated, Electronically controlled Unit
Injection (HEUI).

The 3408E engine offers the following benefits:

• Improved engine performance

• Electronic engine controls
• Lower emissions levels
• Lower engine sound levels
• Better fuel economy
• Increased reliability and durability
3408E Engine Update The 3408E engine is now standard on the D9R Track-Type Tractor.
This modern engine features the Hydraulically actuated, Electronically
controlled Unit Injection (HEUI) system, which offers many
advantages over traditional diesel fuel systems.

The engine electronically monitors operating conditions and provides

precise control and optimal engine performance. HEUI systems offer
Electronic Injection Pressure Control independent control of fuel injection timing, pressure and duration at
HEUI every speed and load point. This unique fuel system uses hydraulics
to actuate the fuel injection system, instead of the mechanical
Injection Pressure

actuation commonly found on conventional diesel fuel systems.

The 3408E with the HEUI system represents a major advancement in

Conventional
Fuel System electronic engine technology. Major benefits include:

Idle Peak Torque Rated

• Improved performance: The engine responds faster with less
Engine Speed
smoke and fewer particulates. It also provides better cold starting.

• Electronic engine controls.

• Lower emissions: The 3408E meets the 1996 and 2001

EPA/CARP emissions regulations.
Electronic Injection Duration Control
• Engine sound levels are reduced by fuel injection rate shaping, fewer
Conventional
moving parts and a high capacity, low speed engine oil pump.

• Up to 7.5% improvement in fuel economy.

HEUI • 50% increase in reliability: Simplified engine maintenance with

fewer moving parts.

Idle Peak Torque Rated

• 20% increase in durability.
