Committee: G20 Summit

Topic: Lifestyle For Environment

Country: The State of Japan
College: Jagannath International Management School

Environment is an important agenda and an issue of deep concern for every nation in the current century. Every
country around the world is a benefactor of natures bounty which is ever so shrinking due to human industrial
activity. Such increasing levels of industrial activity has created adverse affects such as a sharp rise in sea levels
as indicated by a study in 2016[1]. Such consequences are not only a cause of concerne for the developed world
but also a grave danger for nation who do not have significant capital and means to mitigate such adversities.
The Imminent danger of climate change is also a factor which the nations of the world can't ignore as it imposes
irreversible changes to the ecosystems and temperature imbalances, potentially resulting in a permanent and
drastic shift of weather cycles. The Economica and population loss of such a possibility is immense.

Seeing such a grim potential for humanity’s future, the State of Japan stands firm on the side of action. Japan
has also put aside political differences in the pursuit of global action. One such example would be the Paris
Agreement adopted at COP21 in Paris, France in December 2015 as a new international framework for
greenhouse gas reductions in the post-2020 period. This agreement is fair and applicable to all parties, which is
what Japan had advocated since the adoption of Kyoto-Protocol. Japan has shown commitment towards
working with other countries to develop guidelines for the Paris Agreement to realize effective greenhouse gas
reductions by all parties. The potential calamities adressed earlier are of key concern to Japan, and thus they
have taken measures and made legislation towards the same in their capacity. However, such matters of concern
will only be remedied if the international community increase their efforts jointly. This fact is more so important
for the G20 participants, who together represent more than 80% of world GDP according to the World
Economic Forum[2]. The G20 nations possess the economic power and diplomatic sway to make any realistic
change in the current grim trajectory of Environmental collapse.

The Nation of Japan strongly endorses the need of such joint resolutions utilising G20 as a common platform.
The resolution should not only be binding, but also be adaptable for the developing nations so as to aid their
development in a sustainable manner and not act as a detriment to their growth. The focus should also be to
bridge this gap of effort in a symbiotic manner while also bringing effective and necessary fullfilment of
metrics. This can only be made possible thought unimpeded flow of knowledge, tactics and data so that it may
bring forth innovation and break thru towards new solutions. The resolution should be centered around some
key issues the world is facing today.

● The process of Decarbonisation or Carbon Neutrality should be emphasised as it in itself stops or

slows down multiple possible environmental hazards. Japan has pledged to become a carbon neutral
state by the year 2050. Setting up joint research on methods of hastening the process and developing
roadmaps for the same should be prioritized. Development of universally applicable/adaptable protocols
and procedures for decarbonization should be developed.

● The summit should focus on mitigating/Adapting to the unnatural climate change to prevent
disasters sch as crop faliures, famines amd submerging of coastal areas and islands. Japan strongly
emphasises on this as the issue is of grave and immediate concern. Plans and strategies to reverse/stop
this phenomenon should also be discussed.

● Focus should be drawn towards the sustainability of oceans and marine biodiversity in relation to
nations that are reliant of marine based industries like fishing. New practices and standard of regulations
should be formulated in the interest of preservation of oceans whilc causing minimum economic loss.
Plans for rejuvenation of depleted oceanic regions as a result of human activity should also be discussed.

The Agenda aims to tackle a complex and herculeanc task for which Japan wishes that strong and reliable
actions are taken by the consensus of the G20 members, so that we me chart a course towards a safe and
successful future for humanity.
