People sometimes use the unconscious strategy called the defense mechanism, to cope with the pain and deal with anxiety.

Beatnik reaction- is a defense mechanism where a person exhibits behavior that different is from what is considered acceptable or
standard of society, it includes smoking, drug use, early sex and dropping out of school.- anyone who is frustrated may act
aggressively.- harming another person, destroying things(this strategy is called displacement). Other form of defense mechanism is

SOURCES OF COPING AND STRENGTH

Coping mechanism- are the techniques/strategies we use to adapt life stresses. They may be conscious or unconscious choice to
help us establish some measure to control our emotions and behavior to achieve physical and psychological comfort.

There are different types of coping strategies for stress, such as those that focus on cognitive aspect(involves changing the way
we think about stressor) and some would focus on controlling their feelings/emotions towards stress. There is actually no best way
to deal with the stress, for how effective the coping strategy is depends on three factors:

1. Individual- we have different personalities, past experiences and the way we interpret a stressful situation. It means that the
same stressor will get a different reaction from different people. In short the individual himself who controls how he will react
to these stressors.
2. The type of stress- stressors can be found everywhere. The effect of stress depend on what to them is most valuable. The
more valuable to the person the source is, the greater the stress. How the person deals with it affects other aspects of his
life. Such as problem in the family that can affect school work.
3. The circumstances- the timing of the stressor can also significantly impact an individual’s strategy to cope with stress.
Even a small stressor can become overwhelming if it hits a person at a time when they are most vulnerable.

The following can modify behavior towards stress:

Slow down
Organize and prioritize
Live a healthy life
Recognize and accept limits
Seek social support
Writing it down

-Yes, life is hard but it’s not all that bad, we should always be positive, see the good, learn to laugh even if all roads seem to lead
nowhere, learn to cry and cleanse the spirit and most importantly, learn to pray to God.

TAKING CARE OF THE SELF:

* The need for self care

1. Listening to one’s body is a good way to connect to one’s physical being.

2. Always make time

3. Recognize and express emotions properly

4. Reflect on what things are important for these are things that matter

5. Never stop learning

6. Never let a day go by without smiling.

The need for compassion

Compassion is the act of understanding and lessening the suffering of others. It

involves kindness and taking action to help, even if one may not have the resources to give.
Volunteerism is the act of wanting to help without expecting anything in return.

We are social beings and our actions ultimately affect others.
