Introduction Environmental issues are now a strong part of the community and political scene in Australia and around the world. Many customers and staff want to be part of the solution to environmental issues and like to support a business that supports and practices environmentally sustainable work practices. Therefore, this unit of study is becoming more and more important over time as awareness and support for environmental issues grows even further. Sustainability should be part of our normal working day and a normal way to run a business. Sustainability is not just a cost or a feel-good thing - it has real community, environmental and business benefits. For the environment to be protected and improved, all businesses and people must contribute. Even small improvements in sustainable work practices will make big improvements to the environment over time. The environment The environment is now a mainstream social, political and business issue for everybody in the community. What is the environment? We can look at the environment from a number of different viewpoints. Earth — At a whole-earth perspective, we take notice of, and take action to resolve issues that affect the Earth as a whole. This includes: + pollution of the oceans 5 % global warming depleting fish stocks “> whaling Jy air pollution radioactive pollution species diversity safety and working conditions in developing countries. National — We can also look at the environment from a national point of view with focus on such issues as: forests electricity supply species diversity + water supply air pollution national parks rivers * CO: emissions pest species. Participate in envizonmently sustainable work practices Version 2 May 2018 © Training Resource Solutions Pry Lad C TenmeFesoc® BSBSUS201 PARTICIPATE IN ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE WORK PRACTICES Local The local environment is the one that is the most visual to us as we see it every day around our home and workplace. This includes the local areas of: + parks and gardens roads air pollution + species diversity + pest species + water supply electricity supply. Everybody wants the environment around them to be as clean and natural as possible, but the way we run our lives and the way we run our businesses has an impact on the environment around us all the time. Tum on the TV and a light at night and you are using electricity. In Australia, most electricity is produced by burning coal. Burning coal increases CO; emissions and particles in the air. Serve a bottle of wine ina restaurant, and that wine has been produced, packaged and transported using energy, resources and chemicals. All this has an impact on the environment. In this unit, we will explore ways to minimise that impact through what we call sustainable practice. Sustainability What is sustainability? Sustainability is the ability to endure. The ability to survive and be productive. For instance, electricity production by solar energy is a sustainable practice because once you have the equipment to produce solar energy, it is viewed as limitless because the sun is always there; we do not use it up. On the other hand, producing electricity by burning coal is not sustainable because we have a limited amount of coal. One day all the coal will be used up and there will be none left. Coal takes millions of years to make - therefore once it is gone, it is gone! Another example may be that by using harsh cleaning chemicals in the workplace we are polluting the rivers, and species of animals are killed. This is NOT sustainable. However, if we switched to a style of cleaning product that did not harm the environment then this would be viewed as sustainable. This is because a business uses a lot of resources, creates a lot of waste and impacts a lot of people. Environmental issues impacted by a number of industries include: “ Energy use — The more energy we use the bigger the impact on the environment. This includes electricity, gas and fossil fuels. ** COz emissions — CO; is said to contribute to global warming and affect global C weather patterns. + Water — Australia is a very dry climate and we have very limited amounts of fresh water. “ Waste — The more waste we produce, the more resources are used to produce that product. The product itself is also ultimately wasted. + Transport miles — Transport miles is a new concept in environmental issues, and one that is becoming well known in the community. A ‘transport mile’ is the distance the product has been transported to reach the consumer. Buying locally produced products is said to save transport miles and be better for the environment. “+ Forests — Paper and cardboard are made from trees, so if we waste paper we need to cut more trees to make more paper. “ Food production — Some types of food are more energy intensive to produce than other foods. Red meat requires a lot more energy to produce than ¢ vegetables do. Ingredients — Some ingredients are produced in a way that has a large impact on the environment. For instance, palm oil is an ingredient used in many processed foods. Most palm oil is produced in Asia where forests have been cleared to grow palm plantations; this practice of clearing land has led to the endangerment of orangutans in the wild. Organic foods — Organic farming is farming without the use of added chemicals at all. This is thought to be healthier, as the foods do not contain residue amounts of chemicals and pesticides. “Air pollution — Smoke and other air pollutants emitted from your business premises or in the manufacture of the raw ingredients that your business uses are pollutants. + Chemicals — The use of strong and dangerous chemicals in the production or cleaning processes of the business can be harmful to the environment. Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices Version 2 May 2018, ‘© Training Resource Solutions Pry Lid lL Tiaining Resource ae BSBSUS201 PARTICIPATE IN ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE WORK PRACTICES Electricity The more electricity used by a business, the more it costs and the bigger the impact on the environment. A business cannot operate without electricity, but we can reduce the amount of electricity we use through the way we run the business. Most of the electricity we use in Australia is produced by burning coal. Other sources of electricity include wind, solar, gas, landfill gas, bio gas and hydro; Australia does not use nuclear energy. So why don’t we just stop using damaging technology, such as coal and just use more sustainable methods such as solar? Because coal is cheaper that’s why. The price of electricity has a direct impact on the family budget at home and business operating expenses. The government has a tricky job to balance the environmental impact of electricity production with the price people and businesses can afford to pay for electricity. Green energy Most electricity retailers offer customers the opportunity to ‘purchase’ green energy. This energy has been produced by sustainable means such as wind, solar, landfill gas, hydro and bio gas. Customers can choose how much of their energy comes from these sources such as 10%, 20% or even 100% depending upon their budget. Naturally green energy costs more. In reality, all the energy is mixed up together in the electricity grid, but the extra funds and public demand do help energy companies produce more sustainable energy. Participate in nvironmentally sustainable work practices Version 2 May 2018 (© Training Resource Solutions Pry Lid FeniaFesource BSBSUS201 PARTICIPATE IN ENVIRONMENTALLY SU c PRACTICES Climate change Climate change is the result of changes in our weather patterns because of an increase in the Earth’s average temperature. This is caused by increases in greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. These gases soak up heat from the sun, but instead of the heat leaving the earth’s atmosphere, some of it is trapped, making the earth warmer. Greenhouse gases include Carbon Dioxide (CO ») and Methane (CH 4). Global warming and climate change (The terms global warming and climate change are often used interchangeably, but there is a difference + Global warming is the gradual increase of the earth’s average surface temperature, due to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. + Climate change is a broader term. It refers to long-term changes in climate, including average temperature and rainfall. L) CHANGE GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE Ser Tat Participate in environmentally sustainable work practices Version 2 May 2018, © Training Resource Solutions Pty Ld 3B ‘FeningFesouree BS BSUS201 PARTICIPATE IN ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE WORK PRACTICES CO, Carbon dioxide (CO ») is a waste product that is produced by burning fossil fuels, such as gas, oil, petrol and coal. The carbon dioxide that is produced has built up in the atmosphere during the 20" century, since the introduction of the internal combustion engine and is now said to be at a level where it affects the weather by heating up the earth. This heating effect is known as the ‘Greenhouse’ effect and is broadly accepted to be responsible for global warming. It is said that ‘global warming’ will result in drastic weather changes and the melting of the Arctic ice and the reduction of Antarctic ice, melting of Antarctic ice and mountain ice such as that from the Himalayas will raise sea levels putting many low-lying countries in danger of being covered by seawater. ( By reducing energy consumption, a business reduces carbon dioxide emissions and thus reduces the impact of CO 20n global warming. The whole subject is naturally more complicated and controversial than that, but the general principle of using less energy is a good principle regardless of your thoughts on global warming. In Australia, greenhouse gas emissions come primarily (70 percent) from the energy sector. Within this category, electricity generation is the biggest offender, because we rely heavily on burning coal for power. After electricity generation, the largest proportion of emissions comes from road transport. Water During the 21% century, Australia was having low rainfalls which resulted in many areas being in a drought. The combination of low rainfall and increased population has strained the ability of state governments to supply fresh water to many cities and rural areas. As a result, many areas had water restrictions in place which are emergency laws restricting the use of water. These water restrictions together with educational and advertising, campaigns by state governments have resulted in a raised awareness of water use and have generated water savings. But in general, these savings have not been enough, and many governments are now turning to desalination (removing the salt from sea water) to boost city supplies of water. This process uses a lot of electricity and so produces a lot of greenhouse gas. The impact it has for business is the moral and legal obligation to reduce water use and ensure water is not wasted. Waste Waste does not benefit anybody. The more waste a business produces, the more time and money is spent to dispose of that waste. Being able to reduce waste in the business is not only good for the environment, but it can save money. Activity 2 What are the main waste products that your workplace or a business generates? So, from a sustainability and global warming point-of-view, a vegetarian diet uses much less. energy, so has less environmental impact. C Sourcing raw materials Palm oil Large companies, such as KFC and Cadbury have started to take notice and are removing palm oil from their products. KFC is switching to a canola blend and Cadbury is removing palm oil from their chocolate. Forests are cleared and burnt, then palm oil plantations are established. The forest area available for animals such as orangutans, gibbons, elephants and tigers is being (reduced on a daily basis in countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia. This practice if continued will lead to the extinction of these animals in the wild. Currently palm oil is labelled as vegetable oil in the ingredients on a food label Action groups are lobbying the federal government to have palm oil labelled as palm oil rather than vegetable oil, so consumers can make an informed choice. Organic farming does not use any synthetic fertilisers, synthetic pesticides, livestock antibiotics, GM foods or food additives. It is as close to natural as possible. Organic food is very difficult to differentiate from standard farmed food in appearance and it is thought than many foods labelled as organic are in fact not organic. Look for an accreditation label or sticker from a reputable body. Organic food is thought to be healthier as is contains less 9 chemical residue; this does make sense as no synthetic chemicals are used in the farming, However, scientists in general say that there is no evidence that organic food is more nutritious than food farmed under normal farming conditions. (Researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, Sydney Morning Herald July 30 2009). Fair trade products Fair trade is a social and environmental concept to help producers in developing countries achieve higher (fair) prices for their products and promote sustainability. There has been a feeling that these small farmers in developing countries get less than a fair deal for their products from large multinational corporations who may use their power to unfairly lower the prices paid to producers. This less than fair price for their goods, may force a producer into poor environmental practices in order to try to improve their income. There are several organisations around the world that promote and licence use of a fair trade logo to show that the product is meeting their fair trade standards. Fair trade coffee is a high-profile example of this, but the garment industry has also come under the fair-trade spotlight in recent years. A transport mile is the distance the goods have been transported to reach the consumer. Some restaurants are now using food miles as a marketing concept to show that food is local, fresh and sustainable. For example: You go to the supermarket to buy some oranges, they have two types of oranges on sale, one type is imported from the USA and the other is grown in your state. The imported orange has travelled a lot further and more energy has been used to transport the orange to you than the orange grown in your own state or area. From an environmentally sustainable point of view, it is better to purchase locally produced products than it is to purchase imported products or products that have been transported a long way. S Another example is beer; Bob likes the local beer while Raj ois likes the beer imported from India. A lot more energy is used to bring the beer to Raj than is used to bring the beer to Bob. o Pantcipate in environmentally sustainable work practices Version 2 May 2018, ‘© Tining Resource Solutions Pry Lid 19 “airing Resource saline BSBSUS201 PARTICIPATE IN ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE WORK PRACTICES Vehicle fuel consumption ‘Taking the fuel consumption into account when purchasing a vehicle may save money for the business and reduce the environmental impact of the business. Using less firel obviously saves money, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and has a smaller impact on the environment. To allow consumers to compare one vehicle's fuel consumption against another, vehicle manufacturers are required by law to provide fuel consumption figures for the vehicles they produce. These figures are included on labels fitted to all new cars, vehicle sales brochures and also on the green vehicle guide web site. ¢ The standard testing methods used to calculate the fuel consumption on these labels will vary slightly from actual road use as actual fuel consumption can be affected by many factors such as driving style, weather conditions, vehicle load, road conditions and speed. However, they do serve well as a comparison to the relative consumption of different vehicles. a8 CONSUMPTION centurion | | emieane ‘ween ‘orm Participate in environmentally sustsinable work practices Version 2 May 2018 © Training Resource Solutions Py Ltd c TERRSSMeP BSBSUS201 PARTICIPATE IN ENVIRONMENTALLY SUSTAINABLE WORK saurions PRACTICES. Truck fuel consumption Trucks use a lot of fuel because they are big and heavy. Most trucks use diesel fuel. As trucks operate under a wider set of conditions than cars, they do not carry fuel consumption stickers the same way that cars do. You can however check the manufactures specifications, and make a judgement yourself and taking into consideration the type of driving conditions you will use the truck for. There are things that can be done to reduce fuel consumption including: Maintaining the truck well and have the engine turned to maximise the efficiency of the engine. Maintaining the truck tyres to be in good condition and the right pressure. Avoid driving an empty truck, if you can have a paying load in both directions you will use more fuel, but it is carried cargo on not empty space. Using wind deflectors which are sometimes known as fuel scoops can be placed on the top of cabin to help direct air around the trailer or storage unit on the truck and make the truck more aerodynamic leading to fuel savings. They work especially well if driving above 80 km/h. Travelling slower — Traveling at a slightly slower speed reducing fuel consumption. Well planned routes can save the number of kilometres travelled and save fuel as well as vehicle wear and tear. Matching equipment, such as a fridge motor with the size of the refrigeration space and the needs of the task. A fridge motor that is too large will use extra fuel without being of any extra benefit. Driving smoothly and carefully while planning ahead as you drive. Try to drive consistently rather than speeding, followed by heavy braking. The way the driver drives will greatly affect fuel consumption and can save up to 10% in fuel. (www.toll.com.au) Avoiding a truck idling for too long while waiting on a site. Animal testing Practices and welfare of animals have improved over the years, but many medications, materials and products are still tested on animals. Businesses have an opportunity to use their purchasing power to help promote ethical practices by making ethical purchases. There is no set clear cut line on these issues, but it would be best if businesses took the time and effort to research and understand where their raw materials and products they purchase come from. If this, occurs, they are then in a position to make an informed decision about the ethics of the purchases they make. Some cosmetic businesses take a stand not to use products that have been tested on animals. They use that stance as part of their marketing campaign and the image they portray. Packaging Purchasing products with simple recyclable packaging helps to promote responsible packaging and reduce waste. A lot of raw materials and energy goes into making packaging which is not even used. If the workplace is going to be successful in following that policy, all employees affected by the issue must know about and understand the policy. A procedure sets out step-by-step instructions on how to deal with an activity in the workplace. Activities which may have specific procedures developed include: “+ Product packaging. ** Chemical use and disposal. %* CO» emissions. * Ethical purchasing. Where there are environmental hazards, the procedure sets out what to do at every stage of the activity. Procedures need to work! They need to be tested thoroughly before they are implemented. Ina small business, you may work side by side with the owner manager while in a large business there may be an environmental manager who has responsibility for environmental issues. Environmental issues are a matter of much public and political debate, be careful not to force your opinion onto others in your workplace. If your company has a clear written policy and there is a breach, then that is fairly easy to report that breach and you should not come off looking like an environmental fanatic. However, if there are no written policies, making suggestions is fine, but try not to lecture or give long, moral speeches about your option.
