Authors: Meg Cabor, Rachel Cohn, Tanuja Desai Hidier, Jennifer L. Holm, Patrick
Jennings, David Levithan, Ann M. Martin, Patricia McCormick, Pam Munoz
Ryan, Brain Selznick and Virginia Euwer Wolff
Publisher: SCHOLASTIC PRESS

Summary:
There are many stories in this book, such as The Friend who Changed my Life, My
Best Friend and Smoking Lessons. These stories are about all authors have the best
friend in their lives. Also, it tells us how and why these people are their best friends
and what happened between them in the past. Thought these stories, the authors want
to tell us how friends are important to our daily life, so we should keep a good
relationship with them. ( 81 words)

Comment:
I love this book very much because I can know more about the stories between the
authors and their friends who changed life in the past. Also, I can acquire
communication skills so I can learn how to make friends with others because friends
are important in our life. If we do not have friends, we cannot have a lot of fun and
keep good relationship with others. Eventually, we would have bad feelings.
One of the stories I admire the most is The Best Friend because it shows what the
real friends do to help the author─Jennifer L. Holm. I appreciate Alexandra, the
character who is the best friend of the author. She is a very careful and good helper.
She liked to decide something carefully before she took actions, so the author always
knew what Alexandra would say. Once, when the author and she went shopping, they
passed by an ice-cream bar. Before Alexandra ordered the things, the author helped
her to order them. It seems they knew each other very much. Once she was also a
good helper, too. She helped the author to do some work which came from the
author’s mother.
I want to have this kind of friend because she is a person who does not care what
she is going to lose and always help her friends anywhere and at any time.

Title: My Sister Jodie

Author: Jacqueline Wilson
Publisher: Doubleday

Summary:
This story is about two very close sisters, Peal and Jodie. Their
mother and father, Sharon and Joe, decided to move to Melchester College where
they had both been offered new jobs as a cook and caretaker, so Pearl and Jodie
went to this college to receive education. When the term started, Peal made
friends and enjoyed her school life. She also did very well in her schoolwork.
However, Jodie had a difficult time. The other boys and girls in her form called
Jodie “tart” and made her feel miserable.
On Guy Fawkes Night, Jodie climbed up to the tower and dressed up
as a ghost, scaring off many students. Jodie realized that her friend, Dan was very
scared. Jodie pulled the dress off and attempted to open the window and shouted
to let everybody know that it was just her. She tugged too hard and fell out of the
window, breaking her neck and died dreadfully.
Peal and her parents were sad and they left the Melchester College.
Before the move, Pearl’s mum revealed that she was having a baby, Peal was
very happy to have a new sister who was named May.

Comment:
It is such a touching story between Jodie and Pearl. I enjoyed reading
this book so much! The author, Jacqueline Wilson, reflects the life of Jodie and
Pearl brilliantly through the amusing conversation. Since her writing skills are
outstanding, we can learn many skills from reading the book easily.
My favourite character is Pearl because her character was very similar
to mine. She loved reading and took her studies seriously. She didn’t get angry
with Jodie or let Jodie influence her, she loved Jodie very much as a sister. Also,
another reason why I like her is because of her good nature. She was always
willing to help people and she treated everyone kindly. My favourite part of the
book is the period before their mother and father decided to move to Melchester
College for they were very happy. Jodie and Pearl had a lot of friends. After they
moved, Pearl was able to make new friends but Jodie had a difficult time to fit in
Melchester College.
If I were the writer of this book, I would change the sad ending. Jodie
shouldn’t have died and this scene could be replaced by an accident in which
Jodie could learn from. I think the readers would also learn from this too. If I
were Jodie, I would not be so mischievous but be more serious when necessary.
Her mischievous character caused her to be disliked by the others. Lastly, it
resulted the cause of her death.
According to this book, I think Jacqueline Wilson tried to teach
something precious and we should treasure them as we will regret when we

Title: The Land of Story
Author: Chris Colfer
Publisher: Little, brown Books for young readers
Summary:
This book is about Snow White. She visited the castle dungeon to meet her
stepmother who was called “Evil Queen”. Snow White asked her why she was so
cruel and she wished to know why she attempted to kill her three times. Then she
understood her motives more but her stepmother just told her a tale.

The tale was about two of the girls who called Conner Bailey and Alex Baile. They
were twins. It also introduced their English teacher who was teaching a lesson on
fairy tales, Mrs. Peter. She always taught her students to “always learn the truth of
story”. It told us we had to learn the real moral in each story. One day, Alex and
Corner went to their Grandma’s home and their grandma told them a story. Suddenly,
they jumped into another world which was about the famous story that they were
listening – the Red Riding hood. Then, they started their exciting adventure.
Comments:
I think the Story is interesting because the story plot is fabulous and fantastic and
there are many idioms in it. It is a bit crazy and you will not imagine it before. I have
learnt a moral which is “Never give up when you have problems” in this book. It
reminds me although we always come across many problems in our daily life, we
should take up our courage and be more positive to solve them. In the story, Conner
and Ales have came across lots of problems but they were daring when they had
problems.
My favorite character is Conner because she was brave and the smartest girl in
this story. Although she always came across problems, she always had ideas to solve
problems. I appreciate her because when I have problems, I am always frightened
but she wasn’t. My favorite scene of this book is when Conner and Alex saved the
little mermaid in Mermaid land because this scene was very
exciting. It is about how Conner and Alex saved the little
mermaid. I like this scene very much.
If I were the Evil Queen, I would tell Snow White why I
wanted to kill her three times. I want to know why the
queen told Snow White a tale so I hope the next book of
this series can tell me the answer! I am looking forward to
reading it!

Title: Which Witch

Author: Eva Ibbotson
Publisher: MACMILLAN CHILDREN'S BOOKS

Summary:

As soon as Arriman was born, his parents knew that their boy was not like other people's children. He was
born with a set of teeth and his eyes never actually filled with tears. When his father went to a library to find
help, he knew that his son was a wizard.

When Arriman grew up, he knew if he needed to get married, he could just only get maried with a witch.
Therefore, his secretary and his maid helped him to find 'which witch' could be his wife.

The secretary arranged seven witches to join a competition for the Blackest Witch of Todcaster. It was
similar to the Miss World competition. After some magic competitions, Belladonna won. Finally, Arriman
chose Belladonna to become his wife.

Comment:

I chose this book because I entered a competition last year, namely Solo Prose Speaking of the 65th Hong
Kong Schools Speech Festival. I was interested in this book. Also, the characters were fantastic.

My favourite character was Belladonna who was a kind-hearted girl in her early-twenties. She was beautiful,
with a fair complexion. Although she was poor, she helped people all the time. She could manage white magic,
such as producing flowers instead of snakes. How could she become more devilish than all the other witches?
The key person was Terence. Terence was an orphan who was found a little wizard later. He helped
Belladonna a lot in winning the competition. If I were Terence, I would use my magic to help people around the
world.

From the characters of this book, I understand that some people may start from a very humble beginning.
From their hard work, they will overcome difficulties and achieve good results finally.

Title: Titanic
Summary:
This is a book that talks about Titanic the ship. It talks about how the worker built Titanic,
introduces the reason why the ship sank, how the people escaped from the ship and the ten
real reasons for the Titanic tragedy. There are several reason leading to the ship sinking. I am
going to talk about three of them. Firstly, Titanic’s builders removed some of the ship’s
lifeboats, so first-class passengers would have more room on deck. That decision left more
than 1000 people trapped on board the sinking ship. Secondly, the builders lowered Titanic’s
bulkheads to make more room for the grand staircase and other fancy features. If the
bulkheads had been higher, the ship would have sunk more slowly. Thirdly, Captain Smith
delayed his decision to change the ship’s course. If he had given the order sooner, the ship
would not have been heading in the direction of the iceberg. There were only 214 passengers
survived and there are 75 present of people died.
Feeling:
I think Titanic did not sink by accident. If Titanic’s builders did not remove some of the
ship’s lifeboats, there would be more passengers getting saved. If the Captain did not delayed
his decision to change the ship’s course. It would not sink so fast and more passengers should
be saved. Most of the mistakes were made by people. If people did not focus on gaining more
money, Titanic’s builders would not remove the ship’s lifeboats. If the Captain did not do his
work so lazy, he would not delay his decision to change the ship’s course. I think people should
rethink about why the tragedy happened and should try all the ways in order to make this
tragedy never happen again.

How to Win Friends and Influence People, published in 1936, is still one of the best-selling
self-improvement books nowadays. It was one of the notable works of the famous American

writer, Dale Carnegie.

It is obvious that this book is talking about how to win friends and influence people. This is

a phenomenal book and may even change someone’s life. It tells a lot of facts of how to be

popular among friends.

This book is mainly separated into four parts. They are “Fundamental Techniques in

Handling People”, “Six Ways to Make People Like You”, “How to Win People to Your Way of

Thinking” and “Be a leader: How to Change People Without Giving Offense or Arousing

Resentment” respectively.

Maybe this book is tagged as a book for improving business communication skills, I think it

is more than this. For example, one of the main ideas of this book is that our behavior affects

others’ behavior. This idea can be fit in different situations, not just in business

communication.

The part of this book which I love the most is about giving a good impression. And the

method is to smile. “The effect of a smile is powerful – even when it is unseen.” This is what

the book says. Real smiles which come within can come through voices, and may even

change someone’s mood when he sees or “hears” it.

To me, How to Win Friends and Influence People is more than a non-fiction book. It is a

book that could change lives of people. Honestly, this book is a bit dull for me. I think that it is

not necessary for me to finish it, as some of the contents may be boring and not that useful

for me. However, I found lots of useful things in it. Overall, this book is worth reading. I

believe everyone would like to read it!

Title : The Magic Finger

Author : Roald Dahl
Publisher : Penguin Books Ltd
Number of pages : 57

A. Summary
There is a girl. She is eight years old. She has special power. When she gets cross, she will put the magic
finger on the people who make her angry. Then odd things will be happened. The Magic Finger is something
she has been able to do all her life. She can’t tell you just how she does it because she doesn’t even know
herself. But it always happens when she gets cross.

B. The character I like most

The character I like most is Mr. Gregg. It is no doubt that he is very cruel because he enjoys hunting very
much and he does it with his two young sons. They kill animals just for the fun they get out of it. I can’t
stand it.
However, I like Mr. Gregg as he is still very clam when he faces the dangers and sudden changes. When he
and his family members became the tiny little men with duck’s wings and the four ducks with long arms
occupied their home, all his family members cried. He said, “It isn’t any good crying. That won’t help us”.
He decided to build a nest. He asked them to bring lots of little sticks back. However, his son said,”but we
have no hands”! Mr. Gregg said, “Then use your mouths”.
Besides, I like Mr. Gregg because he is willing to change when he makes the mistake. When the four ducks
pointed the guns to them, he promised the ducks that he and his family would not shoot any animals again.
He said,” I’ll never shoot another duck or another deer or anything else again”!

C. The feeling afterwards:

I like this book. I will recommend this book to my friends as it is amusing. The plot is really surprising. It is
really an unforgettable story book. After reading this story book, it let me learn many things.
Firstly, it is important to keep clam when we get cross because it is easier for us to do something wrong.
From this book, the girl had the wrong spelling of “cat”, her teacher said that she was a stupid little girl. She
got cross and put the Magic Finger on her teacher. Then whiskers began growing out of her teacher’s face
and a huge bushy tail began growing on her teacher’s body. Therefore, we should learn not to deal with the
problem when we have the bad emotion.

Secondly, this story book also lets us know that we should change when we have mistakes. From this book,
Mr. Gregg repented of his mistake towards the ducks. He then smashed his guns into tiny pieces. Mrs. Gregg
placed the beautiful flowers upon sixteen tiny graves of the ducks that had been shot by them the day before.
Their sons scattered the barley to different birds.

Finally, the illustrations of this book are really fantastic. They can make me more understand of this book.
They can also enrich my imagination of this book. They are very nice. When I see them, I will laugh.
Title : Basketball Blues
Author :Thalia Kalkipsakis
Publisher : Feiwel and Friends New York
Number of pages : 84
A. Summary
Angie is a sporty girl. She likes playing basketball. She belongs to the Cockatoos basketball team. One day,
a boy from the other team said that she played basketball like a boy. She didn’t want to be called a boy. She
also misunderstood her best friend and team players that they thought Angie was like a boy. She was
heartbroken. She quitted her favourite basketball team. After that, she wanted to be a cheerleader and began
to learn dance. Then, she found that she liked dancing but she did not love it. She decided to play basketball
again. She was very happy as she was back where she belonged.
B. The character I like most
The character I like most is Angie’s father. He is very nice. When Angie told her father she wanted to quit
basketball, he did not get angry. He explained, “When you play serious sports, you have to put up with a
little teasing” and “all the professionals have to get used to it”. Though Angie still insisted on quitting
basketball, he said,” But you can’t forget about your team” and “if you want to quit, then you’ll have to tell
them yourself”. He is so gentle, he didn’t force Angie. Besides, he encouraged her to face and solve the
problem by herself.
Her father also helped Angie to understand the work of cheerleaders. He arranged to let her watch them
rehearse so she could decide if she really wanted to be a dancer. He said, “Ask yourself if dancing will make
you happy, Angie”. He is very attentive.
He let her to try what she liked. He wanted her to find the answer by herself. Finally, she knew that life as a
dancer wasn’t perfect. She realized that she liked dancing but she didn’t love it. She didn’t want to be a
dancer after all.
C. The feeling afterwards:
I like this book. I will recommend this book to my friends as it is interesting. After reading this story book, it
let me learn many things.
Firstly, when the orange-haired boy from other team said to Angie that she played like a boy, she was
unhappy. She also misunderstood her best friend Claire and the team players that everyone thought she
looked like a boy and she was ugly. However, she didn’t asked Claire what she had talked about with the
orange-haired boy at once. She thought it negatively. She decided to quit the basketball team. It teaches me
that we need to solve the problem instead of evading it.
Secondly, Angie said, “My life wasn’t really so bad. Being pretty wasn’t everything”. It makes me think that
we should appreciate what we have. In fact, we are so lucky to live in Hong Kong. We have enough food to
eat, we have clothes to wear, we have toys to play with, and we have a flat to live in. It means our life is
really not bad. Meanwhile, to have a good heart is more important than to have a pretty look.
Finally, Angie said, “this was my battle—I had to face the orange-haired boy myself”. “I even started feeling
bad for saying that the orange-haired boy played like a girl. That wasn’t a nice thing to say”. Angie chooses
to forgive the orange-haired boy. She is so clever because it uses much energy to hate someone. Besides,
bible teaches us that “do not let the sun go down while you are still angry”. I also learn to do it.
