WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA?

Social media refers to how people interact in online communities and networks to create,

share, and/or exchange thoughts and ideas. Individuals can utilize social media to keep in touch

with family and acquaintances. Some people will utilize social media platforms to network and

find career opportunities, interact with people from across the country who have shared

characteristics, and express their own views, opinions, and observations.

HOW DID SOCIAL MEDIA STARTS?

Classmates.com and SixDegrees.com were the first businesses to develop social

networks based on online technologies. In the year 2000, SixDegrees.com claimed to have over

three million active users. However, they were unable to convert those users into profit, failing

along with many other dot-coms during the e-commerce boom that year. The early 21st century

saw the eventual rise of social media platforms. Social networks like Friendster and MySpace

enable digital interaction between family members, friends, and random people. Later,

Facebook took over the positions of these two websites, growing to become one of the most

popular social media platforms in the world with billions of members.

HOW DO YOU USE AND MAXIMIZE YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS?

I use social media to communicate with people quickly, whether it be through texting,

video conferences, or pictures. Without ever leaving the warmth of my home, it gives me the
chance to interact with individuals from all over the world. Social media allows me to research a

variety of things, gain more knowledge about them, and keep up with the latest happenings. I

utilize social media for job and school-related functions in addition to for communication and

entertainment. On various platforms, there are certain groups where you may look for any

available career opportunities. Another illustration would be the time I joined a Facebook

community of psychologists and students who assisted me in finding participants for my study.

WHAT WAYS OR MEASURE DO YOU OBSERVE TO COMBAT THE NEGATIVE IMPACTS

OF SOCIAL MEDIA?

Being more alert and aware of my habits has helped me avoid drowning in endless

browsing. I also keep track of how much time I spend on social media each day. To prevent

distractions when studying and working, I usually leave my phone behind. Knowing the addictive

nature of social networking sites has enabled me to be more disciplined with the time I devote to

them. To counteract the bad effects of social media, I utilize it responsibly. I mostly use social

media to connect with individuals who inspire me, have common interests, and give me a sense

of belonging.
