Assignment No. 6 (100 pts.)

1. The 1976 Tripoli Agreement was hailed as the solution to the Philippines’
“Moro Problem” by 1980s. Discuss. (50 pts.)

I agree that the 1976 Tripoli Agreement became the solution to the

Moro problem until it took effect after it was signed up. The document
was signed by representatives including the head of the front which was
Nur Misuari. So, the whole agreement aims to establish a just and peaceful
solution to the Muslims in the South of the Philippines. It included four main
agreements together with its policies. Thus, the agreement itself is indeed
for the benefit of the people and for lifelong-lasting peace.

What was more was that, the highlight of that agreement was to make
an autonomous region that comprises 13 provinces, and all the cities that
were under those areas. Thus, they have the right to establish their own
courts, build educational institutions, can have their own administrative
system, and they can have their own economic and financial system, and
many other rights. It was also added in the policy that the cease-fire will
automatically be declared after the signing. This included the releasing of
political prisoners, returning the people who had run for safety, and
guaranteeing freedom of movements and meetings.

As much as it wanted for a peace solution. The agreement was

considerably ideal and ended up being neglected, yet it became the turning
point of the peace process of the Philippine Government and the Moros. It
was indeed the moment of truth that the people have been waiting for to
initially start the peace and development of the South of Mindanao and the
entire country. After all, it is the hailed solution of the Moro problem.

Aforesaid, this agreement plays an integral part of the peace that we

have all wanted. It was almost the beginning of everything that might set
right the wrong misconceptions. It might be the instrument of the rise of the
new nation. This might open the chances for the harmonious nation we are
desiring for, but things happen, we can’t control some circumstances and
just continue with what is around. We got “peace” today, but who knows
what tomorrow brings.  No one can guarantee.
2. My Homeland Mindanao and Sulu: What shall I like it to be. Discuss. (50
pts.)

I am a proud Cebuana - Filipina in my own homeland and native,

Mindanao. I woke up seeing the wonderful culture of Mindanao, when I say
wonderful it means it is everything. All you can see are colorful and
astonishing to look at, especially the people who had different identities living
out with full pride and honor. I have to say that the people behind this culture
are the best contributors to this heritage. Of course, I must not forget the
various cultures we have on this island coming from different societies we
grew up in. I can say that we have one of the richest cultures and traditions of
this country. Since we do have a number of tribal societies namely, Lumads,
Christians and Moros, are huge proof that we were blessed with these gifts.
As a matter of fact, Mindanao is full of wonders, the creator has been
generous in giving us the best of his creations. That is why I am proud that I
live here peacefully and enjoying the gift of a masterpiece. This is when I
realized, I found the paradise of my life and I can live forever on this island
with my family and my future self. And I wish that I can live longer to see how
it flourish and develop. They were not wrong when they say that this is “the
land of promise”. We got mountainous, we were surrounded by beautiful
oceans, we got agricultural lands, and many other golden gifts. This island
became prosperous because it got to contribute for the whole Filipino nation.
Thus, they were wrong when they thought that Mindanao is an island that has
nothing but a dull place.
It seems perfect right? But, there is no such thing as the latter. We still
have a lot to improve and develop. Just like what I have said, I wish to live
longer so that I can behold the things I wish for my homeland. A simple
woman like me is still hoping for the fulfillment of the missing pieces of the
puzzles of this island.
I like it to be more open for everybody, in a sense that discriminations
will be thoroughly wiped out. Because I didn’t like the mindset of them saying,
“Ayaw ug duol ana kay Muslim/Blaan na.” Look how insolent these people are
to say about our brothers and sisters. These people who have the nerve to
insult our friends are indeed narrow minded. I just want to put an end to this
because we are now in the contemporary world, and we’ve got to learn how to
accept differences from the societies we grew up in. Because after all, we all
are Filipinos.
I want my homeland to get more progressive on economic
development and to become a globally competitive island. This is very
relevant for this generation and for the upcoming generations, for us not to be
left behind. Mindanao has a high potential for having a better economic
condition for it has plenty of ports and products to export for.
I like my homeland to have peace, tranquility, and harmony. These are
what we are fighting and praying for ever since. And I just hope that someday
and one of the soonest that we will reach the peace that we all wanted, not
just here particularly in our homeland but for the whole Filipino nation.
Because I want to cherish the rest of my life experiencing a nation who unites
and lies in a harmonious place.
And lastly, I like my Mindanao to be flaunted but not being stereotyped
as a land of war, chaos, illiteracy, and uncivilization. Read again, and you will
know what Mindanao has got. We are not selfish to keep it to you, thus we are
sharing these for you to accept and learn about Mindanao.
