Abstract. In order to solve the problems in the structural design of the gear pump in
use, three dimensional modeling software is used to complete the parts modeling of
gear pump one by one, it is assembled as a gear pump, and the structure of gear pump
is optimized by auxiliary design, further improve the performance of gear pump,
Computer aided modeling design can effectively improve the design efficiency,
Optimize the structure performance, reduce the design cost and improve the economic
benefit.
The tensile characteristics of pump body. Stretch feature design is based on sketch, which is
extended in the vertical direction of sketch plane. It is divided into base stretch, cut stretch and add
stretch. For stretching operation, firstly, select the stretched sketch, secondly, specify the vector
direction of stretching, thirdly, limit the stretching distance in the vertical direction, fourthly, select the
Boolean operation of the stretched body, fifthly, further improve the draft, offset and body type

settings of the stretched body according to the needs, and then preview the stretched body to complete
the stretching modeling. The design of pump body is based on the end face sketch, and the solid
modeling is completed, as shown in Figure 3, Based on the existing plane and the new datum plane,
after completing the sketch outline design, the drawing operation is carried out several times to
complete the drawing design of the pump body, as shown in Figure 4.

Sweep stiffener features. There are many methods to design sweep feature, such as sweep, style
sweep, change sweep and so on, but they are all based on sketch contour. In the sweep operation, one
or two section curves are selected as the original curves, then guide lines are added and selected, and
at most 3 lines can be selected. Then ridge curves are selected, section options and volume types are
set as required. The sweep design of the pump body stiffener is to take a quadrilateral section as the
original curve and add three guide lines to complete the sweep feature operation. The swept entity of
the stiffener is shown in Figure 5, and the entity after Boolean summation with the pump body
stretched entity is shown in Figure 6.

Pump body modeling. The hole feature of pump body can be designed by drawing sketch or
directly drilling. Select the hole in the insert and design features, first select the hole type, then
determine the drilling position and direction, then complete the shape and size design again, finally
complete the Boolean operation and setting, preview and confirm. The thread design features need to
be completed on the basis of the hole, mainly determining the rotation direction, major diameter,
minor diameter, pitch and angle of the hole. The hole in the pump body is the locating pin hole, and
the thread pitch is 2.0 mm and 1.5 mm. The local shape [2] is shown in Figure 7.

The detail feature design of solid includes fillet, bevel, draft and so on. Select the edge rounding in
the insertion and detail features. The common operation is to select the edge to be inverted, enter the
shape and radius of the fillet, and the rest will be determined according to the situation. The reverse
angle is also to select the chamfered edge, select the offset cross section type, input the offset distance,
and complete the detailed feature modeling of the pump body, as shown in Figure 8.

Create the gear base. The tooth profile is created by cutting tooth sketch curve, combining with
tooth root circle and tooth top circle, and hiding other curves. Create a tooth entity by stretching the
feature, and array the tooth entity by "drawing the feature", as shown in Figure 13. On the X-Y surface,
take the tooth base circle as the contour to create the gear shape, as shown in Figure 14.
Create a gear shaft. On the basis of gear modeling, the gear shaft is stretched, spline features are
created, and detailed features are improved, the modeling of driving gear shaft is shown in Figure 15,
and the modeling of driven gear shaft is shown in Figure 16.

6. Conclusions
Three-dimensional solid modeling and overall assembly design of external gear pump parts, modeling
process using UG three-dimensional design software. In this paper, the main parts of gear pump,
including pump body, end cover, driving gear shaft and driven gear shaft, are studied. The sketch
contour design, drawing, sweeping, thread and detail features used in modeling are analyzed in detail.
The auxiliary part modeling is used to complete the overall assembly drawing and explosion drawing.
