In chapter 9 we told the story of Scott
‘Moreau’ call to ministry. Though the call
to ministry was unexpected and dramatic,
‘the tug toward mission as the place where
God would have him serve came much
more slowly.

area that it merits special consideration in
its own right, and we provide an analysis
of this important phenomenon in chapter
17. At this point, we explore important is

they might fit into training for long-term
‘The 2001-3 edition of the Missions Hand-
book reported an increase of over $0 per-
cent in the number of people embarking on
short-term projects through mission agen-
cies from 1996 to 1999, with over ninety-
seven thousand people going (Moreau
2000¢, 34), This does not include the large
numbers of others who go through local
churches, schools, orontheirown. A wealth
‘of material has been developed and posted
‘on the Internet to prepare you for short-term
missions and to help you navigate the paths
available. For example, MisLinks Short
Term Missions (wwew.mislinks orgipracticall

sites dedicated to short-term missions, and.

ForNorth Americans, short-term mission
projects are comparatively inexpensive ways
to “test the waters" of mission service. They
provide an opportunity to live in another
culture, experience the ways people live in
“other parts of the world, and be used of
God to reach others for Christ. Short-term
mission projects range from sports camps
to construction to teaching (often English)
to evangelism,
Ifyour intention in ashort-term mission
trip is to discover whether long-term mis
sion is the direction you should be going,
‘you should consider several important fac-
tors both in the trip you choose and in what
you look for during the trip.
Ifyou sense the desire to go withan agency
for the long haul, it makes sense to “try out”
the agency through a short-term trip. The
