Problem on General Pressure in Fluids

M&P Collection
November 29, 2022

1. Consider an elastic fluid (Variable Pressure) (Everything else ideal), in an

open smooth cylindrical vessel which rotates uniformly with ω about vertical
z axis. The pressure variation of the fluid is given by p = kρ where ρ is the
density and k is a constant. Prove that the surface of the liquid is given by

x2 + y 2
k ln ρ = ω − gz + C
2
Where, C is a constant. Origin is taken on the axis of rotation
2. Using the equation
dp = ρ(ω 2 (xdx + ydy) − gdz)
find the surface of the situation described above. Derive the equation
3. Would the above equation change depending on the shape of the vessel?
4. Would the shape of the free surface of liquid change if there were smooth
(non-sharp) bumps in the vessel internally, non-intersecting with the fluid
surface?

Hints
2 Think of g, xω2 and yω2 . For the integration think of differentials of function
3 Again, think of what x and y represent. Will they be same in a cuboidal vessel?
