New cylinder head gasket for WÄRTSILÄ® 46

Engine type This bulletin concerns WÄRTSILÄ® 46 engines with cylinder head gaskets
made of stainless steel.

General The cylinder head gasket (part number 124030 or 124044) has
occasionally leaked in some installations. As a result of the evaluation of
the failures the material for the gaskets has been changed. The new
gaskets are made of bronze and will replace the gaskets made of stainless
steel.
There are two alternatives of the new bronze gaskets, depending on the
type of anti-polishing rings used:

Anti-polishing ring with a flange Straight anti-polishing ring

Instructions The change of the gasket material will not cause any change to the
tightening pressure (450 bar) of the cylinder head stud, see service letter
4612S001, issue 3.

Recommendation Mount the new type of cylinder head gasket at next scheduled overhaul, or
when the cylinder head has been removed for inspection.
In case no problem with the previous type of gasket has been noticed in
the particular installation the gaskets in the spare part stock can be used.
The sealing surface of the cylinder head and cylinder liner must be in good
condition. If grinding of the sealing surfaces is necessary please contact
your closest Wärtsilä Services office for support.
