LOADLINE CALCULATIONS

Important points to note for loading calculations

1. Revise your knowledge of load-line and details of load-line marks and zone charts
2. Strictly adhere to the principle that the vessel must be loaded in such a way that she will
not become overloaded at any stage of the voyage
3. For e.g. A ship loading under tropical may not be able to load to her tropical marks and a
ship loading under summer conditions may not be able to her summer load-line.
The maximum permissible depth of loading will depend on the route she is to take, and, whether
the increase of freeboard due to consumption of fuel, stores and water is more or less than the
increase, if any, demanded by the change of zone or change of season etc.
Further, in some cases the maximum permissible deadweight at a first loading port will be partly
governed by what additional freight is to be taken on at subsequent ports.

at Los Angeles and Curacao for fuel. On departure, she will have on board 370 MT of
fuel, 180 MT of water, and 12 MT of store. She consumes 27 MT of fuel and 6 MT of
water and stores daily.
Passages are estimated as follows:
 Vancouver to Los Angeles - 4 days - all summer.
 Los Angeles to Panama Canal - 9 days - summer - tropical in that order
 Panama canal to Curacao - 3 days - all tropical
 Curacao to London – 12 days tropical for 2 days, then Summer for 4
days, then winter for 6 days.
Find the maximum weight of Cargo the Ship can lift at Vancouver, if she is to maintain a
reserve of 6 days fuel at all times. What quantities of fuel should she take in at Los

Q2. From the given date calculate the weight of Cargo a vessel can load at Montreal, if she is to
sail for Glasgow at about midnight of 9th October?
Length -98.2m, Breadth -12.3 m, Summer Draft - 6.24m, Block Co-efficient - 0.79, TPC -
10, Light displacement -1727 MT.
The vessel consumes 14 MT of fuel oil and 6 MT of water, per day.
On board at Montreal are 310 MT of fuel, 80 MT of water, and 10 MT of stores.
She will be in North Atlantic Winter seasonal zone I when the winter season commenced
at 0000, 16TH October (R.D of sea water – 1.025)
Note:- Since the vessel is less than 100 Mtrs in length and will be in the North Atlantic
winter seasonal zone I when the winter season commences at 0000 hrs on 16 TH October,
the minimum permitted free board then will be WNA freeboard which is 50mm (5cm)
greater than the winter freeboard.
The winter freeboard is 1/48 of the summer draft greater than the summer freeboard.
ANSWER:
METHOD 1
Summer Displacement = LxBxSDxBCxRD = 98.2 x 12.3 x 6.24 x 0.79 x 1.025
= 6103.123 MT.
Winter draft = SD – SD/48 = 6.24 – 6.24/48 = 6.11 Metre
Winter Displacement = 98.2 x12.3x 6.11x 0.79 x 1.025
= 5975.975 MT.
Winter seasonal draft = 6.11 – 0.05 = 6.06 Metre
WNA Displacement = 98.2 x12.3x 6.06x 0.79 x 1.025
= 5927.072 MT
Total ROB at Montreal = 310+80+10 = 400 MT.
Consumption per day = 14 + 6 = 20 MT.
Number days to WNA = 6 days (9th midnight to 16th 0000hrs)
Total consumption for 6 days = 6 x 20 = 120 MT.
Allowed Disp sailing Montreal= 5975.975 MT.
Displacement arrival WNA = 5855.975 MT. (allowed 5927.072)
Displacement DEP Montreal = 5975.975 MT
Total ROB at Montreal = 400.000 MT
Light ship = 1727.000 MT

METHOD 2
Summer Displacement = LxBxSDxBCxRD = 98.2 x 12.3 x 6.24 x 0.79 x 1.025
= 6103.123 MT.
Winter draft = SD – SD/48 = 6.24 – 6.24/48 = 6.11 Metre
Winter Displacement = 6103.123 – (10 x (624-611)) = 6103.123 - 180
= 5973.123 MT.
Winter seasonal draft = 6.11 – 0.05 = 6.06 Metre
WNA Displacement = 98.2 x12.3x 6.06x 0.79 x 1.025
= 5923.123 MT
Total ROB at Montreal = 310+80+10 = 400 MT.

Q3. A ship of 12,500 MT deadweight on a Summer Draft of 8.66m and TPC - 23.2 is to sail from Osaka
for London on 1st February via Singapore and Cape.
Her daily consumption of fuel and water is 32 MT.
When leaving Osaka amount to 1,570 MT.
Passages are estimated to be: -
• Osaka to Singapore: 7 days - summer, then tropical.
• Singapore to Colombo: 4 1/2 days – tropical throughout
• Colombo to Dakar: 22 days -4 days tropical, then 11 ½ days summer, then 6 ½ days
tropical.
• Dakar to London: 8 days -2 ½ days tropical, then 2 days summer then 3&1/2 days in
Winter Seasonal zone in Winter Season.
Find the maximum amount of cargo that can be loaded at Osaka?
ANSWER:
Summer draft = 8.66m
Tropical draft = 8.66 + (8.66/48) = 8.840417m
Winter draft = 8.66 – (8.66/48) = 8.479583m
Summer deadweight = 12500 MT
Tropical Deadweight = 12500 + (23.2 x 18.0417) = 12917.57 MT
Winter Deadweight = 12500 – (23.2 x 18.0417) = 12081.43 MT
