2016 WMI Competition

Grade 5 Part 2 Applications Test

Ten Points Each. Total 100 Points. Write answer to each problem inside ( ).

1. Compute: 24 × 77 + 23 × 24 + 42 × 58 + 58 × 58.
( )

2. Suppose the 9–digit number 32a35717b is divisible by 72. Find a × b.

( )

3. As shown in the figure on the right, BCFE is a parallelogram

of area 72. EDF is a triangle of area 20. What is the area
of triangle AEF?
( )

4. Place the nine numbers 1 to 9 into the nine circles below. Each number of these numbers can be
used once and only once so that the sum of numbers in any two neighboring circles is equal to the
number below them. For example A + B = 5 and C + D = 13. What is the 4–digit number

ABCD ?
( )

5. Given that the perimeters of the equilateral triangle and regular

hexagon are the same. If the area of this equilateral triangle is 20,
what is the area of this regular hexagon?
( )
6. Given 4 × 4 grid matrix with 16 small squares. Place the numbers
1, 2, 3, and 4 into the squares, one number per square, so that each
row, each column, and the special areas that are bold face outlined
would contain all these four numbers. What is the sum of the
numbers that are placed in the squares with "?" sign?
( )

7. Starting with the number 1 and write out all the whole numbers in order from the left such as
12345678910111213141516…. When we just past 10 until we reach 12, it is the first time we
have three 1 together which means those 1's started at the 12th digit. Starting with which digit
would three consecutive 7 appeared for the first time?
( )

8. Place each of 5 numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 into each of the five square boxes in the figure below so
that each box will have a different number. How many ways we can do it so that the number place
in the gray box is larger than the two numbers on its other sides?
( )

9. There are 3 piles of rocks. Pile A has 4 rocks, pile B has 3 rocks, and pile C has 6. Tony and Allen would,
in order, take out one or more rocks from any pile. The person who takes out the last rock wins. If Tony
would take rocks first, what would his winning strategy be? How many rocks would he take out first from
which pile? (Write A1 to indicate one rock is taken out of pile A and C2 means to take out 2 rocks from
pile C.)
( )

10. Positive integers from 1 to 2016 are written on a blackboard. The teacher would starting to erase two
numbers of the same parity from the board (same parity means both numbers are odd or both numbers are
even). He then would replace the two number he erased with a number that is the average of these two
numbers. For example, if he erased 5 and 11, he would replace them with the number 8. After repeating
this process many times. If there is only one positive integer left on the board at the end, what is the
smallest possible value for this last number?
