Why use Roll & Draw Sheets?
I like the concept of the roll and draw sheets because it challenges
students to try a drawing in an unexpected way. The element of
surprise and challenge can motivate reluctant drawers to give it a
try, just to see what the outcome will look like.

What Kind of Dice?


I highly recommend the use of foam dice. They are silent, for one thing, and the
students really like them. The only downside is that I have to remind them not
to poke the dice with their pencils. Another alternative is “eraser dice.”

Setting up the Room:
I try to have a set of 1 dice and 1 sheet for every 1- 2 students. For example,
my tables hold 4-6 students, so I put 3 dice and 3 drawing sheets at each table.
Sharing saves on copies and buying dice. Most students actually like sharing
the set, so they can watch what the other person rolls and they can also share
what they got. I remind them in the beginning that even though they are
sharing the dice they each get to make their own rolls, so their drawings should
not look the same.

Ways to use the Roll and Draw Sheets made by Expressive Monkey:
Some teachers use them at an art center, for students to choose from during
center time, or if they finish early on their regular art lesson.

Some of the roll and draw sheets are designed to make some kind of animal
or character. With this kind of sheet, students could make several animals
or characters to be included in their drawing. Or students could make 2-3
drawings in their sketchbooks and pick the one they like best to be the main
character in their drawing.

Some roll and draw sheets are designed to set up an entire work of art. For
this type of dice drawing sheet, you can decide what media you would like your
students to use. The first day could be a quick one day picture with dry media.
Then use paint or mixed media to give it a more finished look.

Instructions
There are 3 Roll & Draw pages to turn this
lesson into a drawing game. Roll the dice to
choose eyes, mouth, extras, and color for a
feeling emoji. Make either a happy, unhappy
or silly emoji. This is a fun beginning
activity or activity for early
finishers.
Use these sheets to have students
make more thoughtful choices about
the design of their emojis. There are
feeling words at the bottom of the page to
help students name the feeling they created.
Students can make all three or choose a
page to draw the emotion they are currently
feeling.

The Feeling Emoji Reference Page has all the


feeling words listed on the choice drawing
pages along with emojis that I’ve made. This
page might help students that can’t read
the feeling words understand what they
mean. (young readers and ELL students) The
reference page could also be displayed in
the room to help students come up with the
right word to identify the feeling they are
experiencing to communicate their feelings to
others.

Remind students that their emoji for each


feeling word could be different. This is just
one example. I’m sure they can think of an
even better emoji for each feeling. If you are
worried about students not using their ideas,
then don’t use this page for the
drawing activity.

make “I statements” about their feelings.

Use for good & bad feelings:


The first page has room for one student to write
about three feelings.

Use for students having difficulty:


The following page has room for only two feelings,
but students can talk about what they want and
what they could try to make things better. They
might say that they will try talking to the other
person to let them know how they feel. When they do
this, encourage them to use their “I statement” to let
the other student know how they feel.

The last 2 pages are cut-apart pages.

Use for good & bad feelings:


This page has three identical parts that students
can fill out to write about just one feeling. Cut the
page into three sections and give one section to each
student.

Use for students having difficulty:


The following page has room for only two feelings,
but students can talk about what they want and
what they could try to make things better. They
might say that they will try talking to the other
person to let them know how they feel. When they do
this, encourage them to use their “I statement” to let
the other student know how they feel.
