Event name: The Triangle
Shirtwaist Fire

Summary: 3-5 sentences

On March 25, 1911, a pleasant springtime afternoon, a fire broke out in a garment factory
near Washington Square in New York City's Greenwich Village. Within minutes, the entire
eighth floor of the ten-story tower was full of flames. Onlookers, drawn by the column of
smoke and the clamor of converging fire wagons, watched helplessly and in horror as dozens
of workers screamed from the ninth-floor windows. They were trapped by flames, a collapsed
fire escape and a locked door. The fire's impact on the politics of New York and the nation
took hold of me in the early 1990s. I had moved to the Village as a reporter for the Miami
Herald, and one day, while exploring the neighborhood, I was surprised to find the factory
tower still standing at the corner of Washington Place and Greene Street. In the years that
followed, I often passed that corner and always paused to look up at those ninth-floor
windows.

What was the outcome (or what is the projected outcome) of this event? 1-2 sentences
Trapped inside because the owners had locked the fire escape exit doors, workers jumped to
their deaths. In a half an hour, the fire was over, and 146 of the 500 workers, mostly young
women, were dead. Many of us have read about the tragic Triangle fire in school textbooks.

Event name: Cripple Creek 1894.html
War (1894)

Summary: 3-5 sentences Group member name: Jorge

The Cripple Creek was a five-month strike instigated by the Western Federation of Miners
(WFM) in Cripple Creek, Colorado. This happened due to the owners of the cripple creek
mine increasing the work day to 10 hours from 8 hours. When the miners protested, they only
agreed to putting it back to 8 hours for a salary of $2.50 instead of $3. This lead to the miners
from Cripple Creek and merging with other company’s miners to become a union, leading to a
strike that changed the work hours back to 8 for smaller companies but bigger companies like
Cripple Creek did not listen.
What was the outcome (or what is the projected outcome) of this event? 1-2 sentences
This led to multiple smelter and ore processing facilities to either shut down or work part time.
While some owners tried to reopen their mines, the union attempted to keep miners from
working through predatory and threatening tactics, which proved to be successful.

cline-1920s

Summary: 3-5 sentences Group member name: NOe

Food prices more than doubled and clothing prices more than tripled between 1915
and 1920. But most businesses refused to boost wages accordingly. In response,
over 3,500 work stoppages involving more than 4 million workers occurred in 1919.
As a result, membership in the American Federation of Labor (AFL), the
country’s largest labor union, surged by 50 percent between 1917 and 1919.
What was the outcome (or what is the projected outcome) of this event? 1-2
That fall, nearly 400,000 members of the United Mine Workers of America
went on strike, as did 365,000 steelworkers across the Midwest who
attempted to unionize. That February, labor unions across Seattle halted
work in solidarity with 35,000 shipyard workers who had walked off the job in
the first general (or cross-industry) strike in American history.
