Elongation at Break
Elonga on at Break, also known as fracture strain or tensile elonga on at break, is the ra o between increased
length and ini al length a er breakage of the tested specimen at a controlled temperature. It is related to the
ability of a plas c specimen to resist changes of shape without cracking.

Elonga on at Break measures how much bending and shaping a material can withstand without breaking. The measured elonga on at break values
is an indica on of the duc lity of a polymer. See More Details
Elonga on at break is important in components that absorb energy by plas c deforma on. High elonga on at break is important for plas c hinges.
In general, “tensile test methods” are applied measure elonga on at break of materials. The common methods used are:
Of course, there exist several other methods as well as listed below, but they are not discussed here.
ASTM D638 and ISO 527 test methods cover the determina on of the tensile proper es of plas cs and plas c composites under defined condi ons
in the form of standard dumbbell-shaped test specimens. The defined condi ons can range from pretreatment, temperature, humidity, to tes ng
machine speed.
The methods are used to inves gate the tensile behavior of the test specimens.
And, the following calcula ons can be made from tensile test results:
For ASTM D638 the test speed is determined by the material specifica on. For ISO 527 the test speed is typically 5 or 50mm/min for measuring
strength and elonga on and 1mm/min for measuring modulus.
Velocity of Tes ng
Slow tes ng allows for polymer relaxa on and higher elonga on at break values
Orienta on Level
Fibers that are less oriented tend to exhibit greater degrees of elonga on at break
Temperature
In general, the elonga on at break increases with an increase in temperature
Filler Content
The elonga on at break of composites decreases with an increase in the filler content
