METHOD STATEMENT FOR

CHILLED WATER PIPE

ERECTION

PURPOSE

 Purpose of this MOS covers the sequence of activates for fabrication,

erection and installation procedure for chilled water pipe ,butterfly valves,
strainers, suction guides and bellows.

MATERIALS TO BE USED

 Mechanical Tool Box

 Mobile Scaffolding
 Spirit level
 Welding rod
 Single/three Phase Machine
 Grinding machine
 Drilling machine.
 Hacksaw Blade & Holder
 Measuring tape
 Welders’ safety equipment
 Nylon rope
 Fastener /Fisher
 spanners

PROCEDURE:
CUTTING AND BEVELLING:

 Pre fabrication of MS pipes shall be done in separate fabrication bays.

 Marking should be done as per Isometric spool number measurement.
 Cutting of pipes, fittings and edge preparation as per the measurement
taken before. (Pipe dia 300mm IS3589)

Doc Ref No: CPS/MOP/STT/003 1 Rev.00

METHOD STATEMENT FOR
CHILLED WATER PIPE
ERECTION

 Based on spool breakdown of piping isometrics, pipe length shall be

cut; Extra length for pipe shall be provided in spools for field
adjustment.
 Remove foreign matter or dirt from inside of the pipe and fittings
before fit-up
 For longer work breaks, place suitable stoppers to prevent debris ,
earth or water from entering pipe open ends

FITUP AND TACK WELDING:

 Cut the pipes to the required length using an appropriate pipe cutter
(AG7cutting machine) or profile cutter (oxy-acetylene), allowing for
provision of pipefitting later.
 The pipe shall be checked by the assigned foreman for its squareness
and straightness, after being cut to the correct angle and site
requirements.
 Fit-up assembly and joint alignment shall be carried out using arc
welding
 For But weld uniform root gap shall be maintained, a 2.5mmdia
welding electrode to be use the base layer and final it will be 3mmdia
electrode to weld the pipe joints
a) Elbow to pipe fit-up:
 Lay one pipe on the adjustable pipe support.
 Place the 45°/90° elbow to the end of the pipe leaving a small
welding gab using a small plat of tack weld for maintaining a level
and constant gap.
 Place 45°/90° sprit level on the face of the elbow until bubble is
centered and ensure that there is no high-low situation or misalignment
between the two outside surfaces

Doc Ref No: CPS/MOP/STT/003 2 Rev.00

METHOD STATEMENT FOR
CHILLED WATER PIPE
ERECTION

 Tack weld in place both the pipe and the elbow and complete the
welding
b) Flange to pipe fit-up
 Lay one pipe on the adjustable pipe support.
 Level the pipe using sprit level
 Bring the flange at the end of the pipe leaving a small welding gap
insert the pipe to the flange bore up to 5mm depth from the flange
face to give enough space for a fitted weld
 Align the top two holes of the flange with the sprit level
 Tack weld in place the pipe and flange

 Later complete the welding procedure which is given before

PIPE ERECTION:

 All lifting tools, equipment’s and roper used for erection shall be
inspected and certified by HSE regulations, Activities shall be done
according to the proper method statement for lifting and handling.
support from ground level to the required level
 Pre-fabricated spools shall be shifted to site carefully: care shall be
taken while handling and stacking of spools to prevent any possible
damage.
 The pre-fabricated spools shall be identified by spool and line
numbers before erection.
 Approved and safe scaffolding and temporary platforms shall be
arranged to carry out erection, fit up and welding of filed joints at
elevated positions.
 Shifting of pipe spool and pipe should be done on the roller support if
required.

Doc Ref No: CPS/MOP/STT/003 3 Rev.00

METHOD STATEMENT FOR
CHILLED WATER PIPE
ERECTION

 Puff saddle 300mm dia for pipe support will be given

 Pipe installation on pipe support shall be from lower level to higher
level.
 Chain pulley block 1 and 2 ton with web sling 1 and 2 ton can be used
by fastening hook at the ceiling or holding at the existing box support.
 Joints shall be aligned and complete the fit-up/ welding as per the
drawing and its specification.
 The final correction and modification made to fabricate spool in order
to allow for stress free installation, which should include: adjustment
of flanges where the spaces are available in bolt holes, cutting and re-
welding or introduction of additional field joints or fit-up pieces.

SAFETY

 Eye - Eye glasses, noise mask.

 Head Protection: - Hard hats or helmets should be worn where there is
the possibility of injury from falling objects. All time mandatory.
 Foot Protection: - Safety shoes should be worn if there are hazards
from falling objects or when handling heavy crates or equipment. All
time mandatory.
 Hand Protection: - Welding leather Gloves should be used while
handling sheet metal to avoid cutting. All-time mandatory.
 Ear Protection: -It may be necessary to wear ear plugs or muffs when
noise levels surpass 85 decibels.
 Scaffolding will be used after certified by Scaffolding Inspector and
make sure the green tag issued for the Scaffolding.
 Fire extinguisher & sand buckets to be placed at welding area.
 Safety belt to be used for working at height 1.8m
