I learned a lot from Dr. Susan. Today we discussed how to be the right educator and
curriculum in nursing. At the beginning of starting the lesson, she gave students the
opportunity to students to express the ideas. Dr. Susan asked “what do you think if the
patient does not understand what the nurse has explained, who is at fault? nurse or
patient?”. “What do you think if students do not understand the lessons that have been
taught by the teacher in class, who’s fault? The teacher or student?”. In my opinion, it’s the
teacher’s and nurse fault. I never discussed these questions with any teacher. These
questions made my mind open that being an educator is not easy. Responsible to deliver
information on any conditions. Before delivering the information to others, educators have
to decide about nice to know and need to know. Besides that, the teacher must be good at
creating a problem for students. Create problems that will make students active in class.

I also learned about the curriculum. The curriculum is formal and informal activities
in the teaching and learning process for students in acquiring knowledge in theory and
practice. The curriculum must be updated annually, both with knowledge and technology.
“Switch, slide, and swap” is a solution to revise the curriculum. Then technology that is
now increasingly advanced, such as 3D printing and organ transplants.

Besides that, I also learned about quality and safety education in nursing. For nurses
to prepare the necessary competencies to continuously improve the quality and safety of the
health care system wherever they work. Transforming education to transform practice with
the new methods. Must know what the patient needs, why the patient needs this
information, respect and show empathy for the patient. Collaborating with teamwork must
also be done by carrying out open communication, mutual respect, and joint decision-
making to achieve quality patient care. This is very difficult to implement in Indonesia,
especially in public health centers, because many people still think that a nurse is not much
better than a doctor. This stigma must be addressed first so that nurses can collaborate with
teamwork.

Overall from this class, I got much knowledge. Dr. Susan has opened my mind. The
educator is problem focused. Educators need to make problems for students. Forcing them
to engage in the class. Educators should understand what the students need to know and
nice to know. I also like Dr. Susan’s personality, she is cheerful. The way she teaches is
easy to understand. Now, I need to practice to be a good educator. Thank you, Dr. Susan!
