Literary Analysis Rough Draft Self-Assessment Checklist

As you compose your rough draft, be sure to follow these formatting and content guidelines.

Formatting (refer to pg. 24 in writing handbook while checking MLA format) My essay has a correctly formatted heading (pg 1 only) and a correctly formatted running head (all pages). My essay is double-spaced. The left and right margins are set at 1 inch. I used 12-point Palatino or Book Antiqua font. I formatted the literary title, The Crucible, correctly throughout my essay. My essay does not exceed 3 pages (not including Works Cited page). Quotations & Lead-ins (refer to pg. 22 in writing handbook while checking lead-in style & format) My essay contains 4 primary source quotations (2 per body paragraph). I removed all ellipses from the beginning and end of all quotations. I introduced all quotations with lead-ins. Each lead-in includes the quotes context (the who, what, where, and when). My essay contains all three lead-in types:
o o o a sentence lead-in a somebody-says lead-in and a blended lead-in.

My direct quotations are cited and punctuated* correctly: blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah (Miller 1169). * Remember: For quotes ending in a ! or ? do not place a period after the parenthetical citation

Content My introduction contains a hook that grabs my readers attention My introduction serves as a transition from my readers world to the world of my paper. It provides relevance in ONE of the
following ways o gives information on the plays historical context o gives information about Arthur Millers life o gives information about the plays release and the publics reception of it o gives information highlighting a modern-day event that relates to the Salem witchcraft hysteria

My essay contains a thesis statement that makes an assertion (it does not merely state the facts). My thesis statement is the last sentence in my introduction. My first body paragraph begins with a topic sentence that clearly connects with my thesis and makes an assertion. My second body paragraph begins with a topic sentence that provides a transition and makes an assertion. I transition smoothly between ideas/examples in each body paragraph by using words and phrases* to connect ideas (*see writing handbook). I explain direct quotes in my own words, connecting ideas and noting what the author suggests about society and humanity. My supporting paragraphs contain phrases like, according to Miller, Miller criticizes, Miller suggests, and the playwright illustrates.

Grammar/Mechanics (read your essay aloud to identify punctuation and usage errors) I discussed The Crucible in present tense. I reviewed my essay for comma errors, run-ons, and fragments. I ran spell check.
**I verify that I have carefully reviewed each of the above self-assessment items**
