CELEBRATION OF FILIPINO VALUES MONTH

I. INTRODUCTION
The celebration of Filipino Values Month in November, pursuant to Proclamation No.
479 issued on October 24, 1994 by former President Fidel V. Ramos, is an effective
measure to create moral awakening and national consciousness on unique, positive, and
genuine values held important by the Filipino people in their daily lives. This celebration
aims to strengthen the Filipino culture adhere to the values, ideals and core values of
education which are makaDiyos, makatao, makakalikasan at makabansa. These values
reflect the country’s rich customs and practices that are instilled early in life.

Filipinos are known globally for their values; love of God, country, and family;
diligence and hard work; regard for personal honor and dignity; compassion, generosity,
adaptability, loyalty to a friend or benefactor, respect and care for the elderly. Interaction
with peoples of various cultures helps them develop a strong work ethic, patience, filial
piety, and business acumen. With these values guiding them, Filipinos are able to cope with
the vicissitudes of life. These values distinguished us from the other nations hence making
this country a better place to live in.

According to Jose Brix H. Arabit, November is Filipino Values Month. It seeks to

promote greater consciousness of values that are uniquely and positively Filipino – love of
God and country, strong family ties, care and respect for elders, diligence, patience, loyalty,
hospitality, bayanihan, generosity, regard for personal honor and dignity.

II. DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED

In line with the celebration , the Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao (EsP) Club held
different activities such as Essay Writing, Poster Making and Slogan Contest, Collage using
recycled materials, Spoken Poetry, Jingle and Dance Contest with the theme for this year’s
celebration “Talento at Pagpapakatao: Susi sa Paghubog ng Responsableng Pilipino” last
November 22, 2019 (Friday). Selected pupils from different Grade level participated in these
activities. Seminars that are related to Filipino values were also conducted, as a way to
manifest and advocate core values of MakaDiyos, Makatao, Makakalikasan at Makabansa

III. INVOLVEMENT OF STAKEHOLDERS

Studies showed that values formation starts in the family, relationship with others and
in the community. They are developed from the direct experiences with others, particularly
with parents, teachers, relatives, friends and classmates.

The family is at the forefront of instilling values among Filipino youth, with the home
as the place for nurturing and strengthening values. Children learn to say “po” and “opo” to
older people and to kiss their hands as a sign of respect.

Schools and institutions reinforce the promotion of values education by providing

opportunities for the youth to impart to others the values they learn at home and in their
assimilation with peers and superiors. Internal stakeholders are also urged to reinforce the
preservation and promotion of these values in education by incorporating them in the
curriculum.

IV. IMPACT OF ACTIVITIES

Casupanan Elementary School yearns to abide with the goal of Education which is
to promote Values Education in the educational system for the development of the
individual, committed to the building of “a just and humane society”.

It is observed that we are living in a sick society today. The increase of violent
activities, behavioral disorder and lack of unity in our society, are signs that we need to
inculcate and instill positive values to our youth today. Values Education is not only essential
to students but to all of us to achieve peace so as to be worthy and genuine Filipino.

Through the activities mentioned above, the pupils will be able to show their God-
given talents; create harmonious relationship with others and possess an avenue to develop
and love their God’s given talent.

V. ISSUES AND CONCERNS

Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao should be taught seriously and properly to instill
positive values among our learners who are vulnerable to common social problems such
as bullying, early pregnancy, illegal drugs, online games addiction, physical violence,
corruption, school drop-outs, etc.

The advancement of technology, the social media and the materialism affect our good
Filipino moral value, especially in our young learners. Social media has a great impact and
influence to our youth and opened their doors from the positive and even negative values
practiced in the other countries. The introduction of these values to our young generation
may diminish their good moral values that may lead to their destruction. With so much
exposure to different social networking sites, there will be possibilities for them to be
exposed in cyber-bullying and even in visual materials containing the explicit display of
sexual activities.

VI. RECOMMENDATIONS
By imparting moral values, teachers play a dominant role in molding the attitude and
approach of the students. Here are some recommendations on how to inculcate the positive
values in our young generation:

1. In a world where children are "growing up digital," it's important to help them learn
healthy concepts of digital use.
2. Be a role model. Be polite, respectful and considerate towards others.
3. While performing religious activities involve the students where you can. It generates
faith and trust towards God.
4. Listen respectfully to their ideas and wherever required correct them. This will boost
their self-confidence.
5. Provide opportunities for them to help others. This will instill in them generosity.
6. Involve them in community service. It will generate an attitude of serving.
7. Comment on compassionate behavior. Let them know that caring is an important
moral value.

Let us not forget our roots. It is the responsibility of every teachers to pass on the
invaluable treasure of moral values to the learners so that tomorrow they will pass these on
to the next generation.
This continuous process will give our society honest, trustworthy, patriotic, faithful,
lovable and good human beings and that day will be the realization of our dreams in a very
real sense.
