DETERMINATION OF PERMEABILITY IN OVERBURDEN : CONSTANT HEAD METHOD The Constant head method is used when the permeability of the strata being tested is very high. In this method a hole is drilled or bored up to the level at which the test is to be performed. The casing is simultaneously driven as the drilling or boring of the hole is in progress. After the required lovel is reached the hole is to bo cleaned by means of scooping spoons and bailer. In case of drilling below ground water level, the hole is cleaned by passing air under pressure by air jetting method, SATURATED MATERIAL, UNSATURATED MATERIAL Flow i ay fe oe | vorkin [ON Penvioussrmaron 5 ae =| ow. Vee. = Aller the hole is cleaned the test is started by allowing clear water through a metering system to maintain gravity flow at constant head. The observations of the water level at 5 minutes intervals is to be noted, When threo consecutive readings show constant values, further observations may be stopped and the constant reading should be taken to the depth of water level Co-efficient of permeability ‘K’ is given by K=C,xQH Coefficient of permeability in cm/sec Constant, varies with the size of casing and rods, the values are given in the table below Discharge in Vm Head in Meter = H, (Gravity Head) -H, (Head loss due to friction) 10 ele fa eet eer a eo eer ee DISCHARGE Littmin Head Loss Due to Pipe Friction Per 3m Length of Drill Rod Versus Discharge
