ENGINE MECHANICAL – IGNITION TIMING

IGNITION TIMING EM19C–01

INSPECTION
1. WARM UP ENGINE
Allow the engine to warm up to normal operating temperature.

TOYOTA Hand–held Tester 2. CONNECT TOYOTA HAND–HELD TESTER OR OBD II


SCAN TOOL
(a) Connect the TOYOTA hand–held tester or OBD II scan
tool to the DLC3.
(b) Please refer to the TOYOTA hand–held tester or OBD II
scan tool operator’s for further details.
3. CHECK IDLE SPEED (See page EM–10)

4. CONNECT TIMING LIGHT
Connect the tester probe of a timing light to the black–red ser-
vice wire in the J/B No. 1 as shown in the illustration.

5. INSPECT IGNITION TIMING


(a) Using SST, connect terminals to TC and CG of the DLC3.

HINT:
TC After engine rpm is kept at 1,000 – 1,500 rpm for 5 seconds,
check that it returns to idle speed.

(b) Using a timing light, check the ignition timing.


Ignition timing: 8 – 12° BTDC @ idle
(c) Remove the SST from the DLC3.
6. FURTHER CHECK IGNITION TIMING
Ignition timing: 6 – 15° BTDC @ idle
HINT:
The timing mark moves in a range between 6° and 15°.
7. DISCONNECT TIMING LIGHT
