4. The Unattended Probe Overview

Thank you for acquiring Expandium’s Unattended Probes solution.

This hardware user manual will detail the onboard products’ specifications, configuration and management .
You will discover through this document, the detailed hardware and technical specifications.

The onboard UP Unattended Probe, conceived by Expandium, is a standard 3U 19” equipment which has
been designed to be installed in trains.

An unattended probes solution can deliver the same results as a traditional drive te st solution but without
the hassle of having dedicated people operating the drive test on different lines. The probes are directly
implemented in maintenance or commercial trains and they automatically upload data to the operator’ s
telecom engineers, hence the name unattended onboard probes.
These probes are conceived to automatically generate calls based on scenarios/scripts defined by the
users. It simulates real train traffic such as voice and data calls. The solution is able to provide perpetually
various meaningful metrics at the fraction of the cost of traditional drive test solutions.

The UP is shipped with the following items. Please ensure all items are included before installation:
 1x UP rack
 1x Rack mount kit
 1x Power cord with locking system
 (Optional) 1x Odometer cable with specific type/length

5.5.1. Electrical safety

Users are advised not to open the probe due to the presence of hazardous voltage: risk of electrical shock.
If the user has to disassemble the probe, always disconnect the power cord and wait few minutes
beforehand.

5.5.2. Environments with explosive substances

Users are advised not to use the probe in or near automotive service and gas stations.
Users are reminded of the necessity of complying with restrictions regarding the use of radio devices in fuel
depots, chemical plants and locations where explosives are stored or ignited.

5.5.3. Non-ionising radiation

Keep a minimum safety distance to the antenna as mentioned in the table below.
Persons with pacemakers must pay special attention. Install the antenna as far away from occupie d areas
as possible. The minimum safety distance in the table below must be applied.

A safety distance of 37.6cm minimum is required for an isotropic radiator with an antenna gain of 0 dBi.
Higher antenna gains require increased safety distance. For more details refer to the recommendations of
the standard EN62311:2008 or use the table below.
Antenna gain ‘D’ [dBi] Safety distance ‘R’ [cm]
0 37.6
3 53.2
6 75
9 106
12 149.6

As it is the case with other mobile radio transmitters, users should note that , for the sake of satisfactory use
of the devices and safety of the operating personnel, it is advisable to use the device only in the normal
operating position.

5.5.4. High temperature

Be careful when handling some parts of the probe. When the probe is powered on, internal components and
circuit boards generate a lot of heat. Consequently, the outer casing and cards may very hot: handle with
caution.

5.6.1. Triorail Modem

The SIM card holder for TRC-5RMe is positioned on the front panel of the module.

Insert the SIM card in the TRC-5RMe with the following instructions:
1. Make sure that the TRC-5RMe is switched off (Probe powered off and no LED lit).
2. Remove the two fixing screws with a TX8 screwdriver to detach the cover.
3. Press with a thin tip tool (e.g. a pen), the small yellow button next to the holder
completely.
4. The holder will slide out of the TRC-5RMe a little bit.
5. Pull out the slider.
6. Put the SIM card on the holder in the correct position that is guided by the small
cut off corner of the holder which corresponds to the SIM card cut off corner.
7. Carefully insert and push the holder into the TRC-5RMe. The slider has to slide back in easily and
must not be wedged.
8. Attach the SIM Card cover by fixing the two M2.5x6 screws with a TX8 screwdriver.

5.6.2. LTE Modem

This card contains Electrostatic Sensitive Devices. An ESD grounding strap must be used to handle this
card to prevent ESD damage.
The SIM card holder is positioned on the radio module which is plugged onto the LTE modem card.

Insert the SIM card with the following instructions:

1. Make sure that the probe is powered off (no led lit).
2. Unscrew the two screw which hold the card in the rack
3. Extract the LTE modem card from the rack
4. Put the SIM card on the holder in the correct position:

Figure 3: SIM card location and position

5. Insert back the LTE modem card back in the rack

6. Tight the two screw which hold the card in the rack

Caution:
 Do not run communication and power wiring in the same conduit. To avoid interferences, wires with
different signal characteristics (i.e., different interfaces) should be routed separately.
 Be sure to disconnect the power supply before installing and/or wiring the device.
 Be sure to use the correct type of coaxial cable for the GSM-R modem. The cable must not induce a loss
of more than 3dB to meet subset-93 EIRENE criteria. Contact Expandium if you have any questions
about the cables.

Caution: Antenna location depends on antenna provider and operator decoupling rules.

For Kathrein Train Antenna Model 87010007, requirement is:

 Antenna must be installed on a conductive surface: 0.5m*0.5m minimum
 Antenna must not be closer than 0.4m from roof edge

 Distance between antennas location must be at least:

▪ Mobile to mobile (8W): 2.5m
▪ Mobile (8W) to scanner: 1.5m (with external filter)
▪ Passive to passive: 0.5m

The UP requires the following from the Operator:

 1 fire-resisting cabinet* with one 5U space available:
 3 U to insert the probe
 1 U space free for ventilation on top, closed by front panel
 1 U space free for ventilation on below, closed by front panel
 2 sliding rails* mounted in the fire-resisting cabinet that can hold at least 10 KG
 A dedicated branch circuit over current protection that must be:
 rated at 10A maximum.
 identified with a dedicated label

*As shown in the next figures. These are not included with the probes.

5.9.1. Safety requirements

Connect ground:
Grounding of the equipment is important for safety. This equipment must not be operated unless it is
grounded. When installing a unit, the connection to the 2 protective grounds must be made before any other
connections are made. When removing a unit, all signal and power connector must be removed before
disconnecting the protective ground connection. Mandatory grounding is done by 2 means:

 Grounding screw: see step 2

 Power cord: see step 3

5.9.2. Cabinet temperature

Fire-resisting cabinet temperature must not exceed +55°C.

5.9.3. Mounting & Connecting

The UP comes with 8 screws/washers/nuts to fasten the probe onto a 19” rack. Procedure to follow if the
UP’s back is accessible when seated in the 19” rack:
 Step 0: Place/adjust the slide rails in order to accommodate the probe. 2 sliding rails are required and
should be included or acquired with your cabinet supplier.

Caution: Used batteries are environmentally hazardous materials. Dispose/recycle the batteries properly.
Caution: There is a risk of explosion if the wrong type of battery is used. To avoid potential danger, always
be sure to use the correct type of battery. Contact Expandium if you have any questions about replacing
your battery.
Caution: Be careful when handling parts of the probe. When the probe is power on, internal cards generat e
a lot of heat. Consequently the outer casing and cards may be too hot to safely touch w ith bare hands.
Caution: the UPS_CAP card contains ultracapacitor which could be dangerous when charged and shorted.
In such situation, arcing may occur and result in molten metal splattering and arc -flash hazards. The
technician must power off the probe and wait the complete discharge of the UPS_CAP (no more LED lit)
before extracting the card.

For other issues, please contact Expandium.
