Silver Linings Playbook

2023

Dear challengers,

If you’re reading this you’ve chosen to enroll in the 2023 Silver Linings Playbook. For that I
congratulate you! The playbook consists of 18 challenges, including 3 challenges thought of by the
community, designed to get you out of your hobby comfort zone with the goal of improving as a
miniature painter/hobbyist in general. The goal is to complete these challenges throughout the
course of 2023. The challenge ends when the clock strikes midnight on December 31st 2023
(GMT+1).

Good luck!
Hello!
My name is Joachim Van Lommel and in the summer of 2022 I started my own miniature painting
business located in Belgium: Silver Lining Miniature Painting! From a young age I've been passionate
about the miniature hobby. With over a decade of experience in painting miniatures under my belt I
strive to deliver high quality, personalized projects. Want to see more of what I do? Check out my
website.

Like my work? It surely hasn’t always been at this level. Below you can see my first ever miniature I
painted, a goblin from Warhammer fantasy. On the right you can see one of the miniatures I’m most
proud of. As you can see, there’s hope for everyone!

On my Instagram account my main goal is to provide short and clear hobby tips, that painters of any
level can incorporate immediately. The focus is on self-improvement. By doing so I myself have learned
a lot from this great community. As I truly believe that the way of improving as a miniature painter is
to challenge yourself I decide to host the Silver Linings Playbook. On the following pages you’ll find all
the necessary information to participate. Your progress can be logged in a separate sheet.

You can join the conversation and interact with the community by joining my discord server.
Alternatively I’d appreciate you follow me on Instagram to help my account grow. Though not
required, sharing your progress on social media and tagging me is greatly appreciated. Have any
questions regarding the challenge or feedback? You can let the community know or contact me via
dm on Instagram or discard or send me an e-mail: silverlining.miniaturepainting@gmail.com.

Thank you for being a member of this great community,

Joachim.
The playbook

1. Finish the project that has been sitting on your painting desk the longest.
2. Use one of the bottle of paints you use the least in your next project. (you can exclude paints
that started drying up, shifted
3. Write and share (with me or a broader audience) your 3 things fellow hobbyist should
know/start doing/etc.
4. Create a diorama, vignette or model on a plinth.
5. Use this technique: Freehand!
6. Use this technique: Glazing!
7. Use this technique: Edge highlighting!
8. Use this technique: non-metallic metal! Need advice, ask me or the community! Already
experienced with NMM, try a color you haven’t tried before.
9. Take a picture of a primed miniature, place the lighting so it mimics how you want to paint
the miniature. Use this reference picture to determine where light hits the miniature to
guide you throughout the painting process.
10. Take a finished model, analyze it, ask for feedback (to me or anyone you feel like), list a
number of ways you can improve on this paintjob and do it! Anything goes, from adding
additional basing elements, to completely rebasing the model, doing small tweaks like
applying a wash or edge highlighting to completely changing the color or techniques you
used on certain areas or increasing the contrast over the entire model. Have fun!
11. Paint something you haven’t painted before: model from a different range/game, miniature
bust, vignette, diorama, not a miniature at all.
12. Get inspired! Look for a reference picture that inspires you in some way: use of techniques,
style, colors, conversion, composition, anything. Analyse this reference picture, why does it
appeal to you, what colors/techniques etc were used. Use this reference picture throughout
the project.
13. Paint a miniature using only pure black and pure white (including grey tones). Focus on all
non-color related aspects of painting: texture, contrast, placement of hightlights.
14. Convert a miniature: modify it any way before painting, big or small.
15. Challenge yourself! Add one challenge of your own choice:
16. Pick a miniature and choose one hobby aspect to focus on. Paint that specific area, use a
specific technique etc. Don’t finish the miniature, move on to the next project for now.
Congratulations, you learned something, without the need to necessarily finish the entire
model!
17. Experiment with adding texture to a specific material or to create a transition.
18. Make a base with materials you collected outside. You’re allowed to use paints you didn’t
collect in the wild of course :).

A number of challenges requires specific information or multiple photo’s to complete the challenge.
This will be indicated in the challenge log sheet.
Prize support

The challenge is mainly designed to challenge yourself and is meant to be informal. The primary goal
is to have fun. Nevertheless, I want to reward your commitment, so I’ll award a number of prizes at
the end of the challenge.

Prizes:
1. One 2 hour private coaching session by silver lining miniature painting.
2. Bases, movement trays and tokens for a full Warhammer AoS/Warhammer 40k army
(around the size of a standard length game) or similar amount of bases/tokens for other
game systems. Can also be exchanged for 2 paints racks or 1 paint rack and 2 tool racks.
(incl. shipping costs worldwide.
3. Painted bases, including 3d printed epic basing bits, to display level for an entire unit (10
infantry models, 5 large infantry models/cavalry, 3 large models, 1 monster base). (incl.
shipping)
4. Same as the 2nd place prize excluding shipping costs.

Winners will be selected as follows:

MVP

MVP (most valuable painter) will be chosen by silver lining miniature painting based on creativity,
effort and overall quality of the completed challenges. The MVP is the one that goes above and
beyond.

Community vote

The second place prize will be voted on by all of the challengers. All challengers that completed the
playbook will be eligible, if the community vote coincides with the MVP selection, the community
vote will go to the second place challenger. Challengers will not be allowed to vote for themselves.

3rd place

The 3rd place prize will go to a randomly drawn challenger who completed the playbook.

Wild card

To make sure every participant is eligible for a prize, one wild card will be drawn amongst anyone
who participated in the challenge. It doesn’t matter for how long and for how many challenges. If
you send me an incomplete challenge log with proof that you at least attempted a challenge you’ll
be eligible.

Winners will have their choice amongst still available prizes. Prizes will be chosen in the following
order: 1. MVP, 2. Community vote, 3. 3rd place, 4: wild card.
Rules
1. The challenge starts on April 1st and ends on December 31st at midnight (GMT+1). To be
eligible for prices requiring completion of the challenges a challenge log must be entered by
that deadline.

2. Challenges can be interpreted liberally, as long as your approach still makes sense. When in
doubt, check with silver lining miniature painting. For example, if the challenge is to try
NMM, you don’t need to have it meet a certain standard, it doesn’t have to be a full suit of
armour, etc.. It can be a ring, a belt buckle or a button.

3. Completed challenges have to be logged in a separate sheet. A photo of the miniature

before the start of the challenge including a note stating “SLP 2023” as well as a picture
upon completion of the challenge have to be added to the log for a completed challenge to
be valid.
Multiple challenges can be combined in one project. As long as all of the challenges were
completed in their own right.

4. Completion of challenges does not have to be spread over time. You don’t have to complete
a challenge every 2 weeks.

5. Completed challenges can be revoked by silver lining miniature painting and silver lining
miniature painting has the sole right to decide whether to revoke a completed challenge.
Should any community member suspect foul play please contact me to look into the
situation.

6. This is a challenge, rather than a competition. No harassing other challengers or other forms
of negative behavior. If the behavior persists after a warning you’ll be removed from the
challenge and the server.

7. I retain the right to exclude participants from the challenge and their eligibility to receive a
prize.

8. As this is a community event, sharing your progress and commenting on other people’s work
is strongly encouraged. Tagging me when you post your work is greatly appreciated, but
obviously not required. I’m also always open to collaborate on a post, if you’re interested
feel free to reach out to me privately.
