Jase is going to go to her mother's office at Marks Building from Living World Mall. Before he goes there, he
checked the map to compare the time needed to go there by car and by walk. He finds something very interesting
there. If he goes there by walk, it will be closer but take a longer time than by car.
Please answer the following questions using the map and the information given!

a) What is the distance will be covered by car?

1400 m
1.4 m
350 m
0.35 km

Correct answer. 5/5p

b) What is the most possible displacement between Marks Building and Living World mall?
330 m to North East
370 m to North East
380 m to South West
280 m to South West

Correct answer. 5/5p

c) What is the speed of the car approximated by the map?

7.8 m/s
5.8 m/s
1.9 m/s
1.5 m/s

Correct answer. 5/5p

d) What is the velocity approximated on the map by walking?

5.8 m/s to North East
1.4 m/s to North East
1.9 m/s to North East
7.8 to North East

Correct answer. 5/5p

e) If you are Jase, which path will you take? Explain the reason!

Answer:

If I was Jase I will choose by walking, because we will not have any traffic jam that can slow us down, while
in car there might be traffic jam that can slow us down. So we can arrive there in more than 3 minutes.

Madeline and James are going to go to a grocery which is about 40 km away from their house. They are in hurry to
catch up the mid night discount and have to reach there in 30 minutes or less, so they have to pick the suitable car
before they go. Since they are going to pass the expressway, the car they choose must not have a speed more than 100
km/h.

Average speed Highest speed

Car A 20 m/s 90 km/h

Car B 25 m/s 120 km/h

Car C 30 m/s 150 km/h

Please use the information above to answer the following questions!

a) Please convert the unit of the speed for Car A-Car C into km/h and show the calculation!

Answer:

Car A = (20 x 3600) : 1000 = 72 km/h

Car B = (25 x 3600) : 1000 = 90 km/h
Car C = (30 x 3600) : 1000 = 108 km/h

Correct answer. 5/5p

b) In your opinion, which car will be the most suitable one? explain the reason and give it evidence!

Answer:

In my opnion, the car that will be the most suitable one is Car B because Car B has average speed of 90
km/h, which is the closest to 100 km/h but not more than 100 km/h. It can reach the grocery store within = 40
km : average speed = 40 km : 90 km/h = 0.44 hour = 26. 67 minute (still less than 30 minutes).

Correct answer. 5/5p

Mathilde rides her bicycle until she reach home. In the first 100 s she goes to the north for 1.5 km and the turns to the
west for 500 m in 250 s. After that she rides to the south for 750 m and the to the east for 250 m with total time of
550 s. In order to reach the parking area, she has to go to the south for another 750 m and to the east for 250 m in 100
s.

Please answer the following question using the information above!

a) Please draw her movement using a simple diagram/drawing and find her final direction!

Answer:

b) Find the total distance, time and the speed of Mathilde's bicycle (in m/s)  and write calculation completely!

Answer:

Distance = 1500 + 500 + 750 + 250 + 750 + 250 = 4000 m

 Total time = 100 + 250 + 550 + 100 = 1000 seconds
Speed = 4000 m : 1000 s = 4 m/s
The total distance is 4000 m.
The time is 1000 seconds.
The speed is 4 m/s.

Correct answer. 8/8p

c) Find her displacement and velocity and write calculation completely!

Answer:

Her displacement is 0. Her velocity is also 0 (0 : 1000 = 0)

Correct answer. 7/7p

The article below is taken from https://www.qld.gov.au/transport/safety/road-safety/driving-safely/stopping-distances
and the Pearson Physics Student Book

The simple truth about speeding is the faster you go, the longer it takes to stop. The crash will have harder impact
when you speed. Even small increases in speed could have severe consequences. If a pedestrian steps
out into the
path of an oncoming vehicle which is speeding the difference could be a matter of life or death.

When a driver suddenly sees an object blocking his way, he will need time to respond on the situation, this is called
as a reaction time and depends on driver's condition and experiences. The distance travelled by the car under this
condition is called thinking (reaction) distance. In short, the longer the time of the driver to respond, the longer the
reaction time and the thinking distance. When driver finally presses the brake, the car needs time to stop eventually.
The distance travelled by the car until it stops is called braking distance.

Below is the thinking (reaction) and braking distance for average family car on the dry / wet road :

a) What is the difference between thinking and breaking time?

Answer:

The difference between thinking and breaking time is that thinking time is the time needed for the driver to
respond when seeing an object in front if the vehicle, while braking time is the time needed for the car to
fully stop after the driver hit the brake.

b) Andy was driving his car at 20 m/s when he saw a truck that might crushed him in about 150 m. He decelerated
his velocity after 2 seconds of thinking. He can finally stop 10 seconds after thinking. What was his
acceleration?

Answer:

Braking time = 10 - thinking time = 10 - 2 = 8 seconds

Acceleration = (0 - 20) : 8 = -2.5 m/s^2
His acceleration was -2.5 m/s^2 or decelerate at 2.5 m/s^2.

Correct answer. 4/5p

c) Please draw the velocity time graph of Andy during deceleration until he stopped (Use the drawing tool and
attach it here!)
Correct answer. 7/9p

d) Please calculate the velocity time graph that on question (c)!

Based on that distance, check whether it meets the reference picture given above. What might be the reason that
it will meet or not meet the reference

Answer:

Distance in story = 150 m

Distance in my graph = 1/2 x 8 x 20 = 80 m
So, the car can stop before crashing.

Correct answer. 3/5p

BONUS

How do you apply your understanding to this topic (Force and Motion 1) for safe driving?

Answer:

I apply my understanding to this topic for safe driving by learning that we must not drive to fast (pass the speed
limit) because the higher the speed the longer the time it takes the vehicle to stop. If we drive in high speeds, we
may cause an accident that endangers our lives and others.

Correct answer. 4/4p
