Instructions: read the definition and examples I have provided for environmental conflict, then research an
environmental conflict you are interested in and answer the questions about it.

Environmental conflict definition.

An environmental conflict is a particular social conflict characterized by:

A. The qualitative or quantitative reduction of available environmental resources (water,


biodiversity, farmable land, raw materials and other limited common goods) due to the
implementation of profitable projects by multinational companies and/or inappropriate
policies by Governments, International financial organizations.

B. The increase of protests by local residents and/or larger opposition movements in civil
society, in an effort to protect the environment, common goods and people’s rights.

Examples:
-Nuclear plants
-Deforestation in the Amazon
-pesticide use
-water resources

Environmental effects
All of the surroundings of the plant were
contaminated with radiation killing them.

Social effects Persons where uncapable of living there so they

Economic interests involved the IAEA Post-Accident Review Meeting, wrote:


"After I had visited Chernobyl NPP I came to the
conclusion that the accident was the inevitable
apotheosis of the economic system which had been
developed in the USSR over many decades.”

Political factors The Chernobyl Forum report said that some seven
million people are now receiving or eligible for
benefits as 'Chernobyl victims', which means that
resources are not targeting those most in need.
Remedying this presents daunting political
problems however.

Historical factors The accident was in 1986, during the cold war,
were the USSR, and The United States of America,
were in a ideological war.
