Aluminum has high thermal conductivity, so heat is drawn away from the welding area. Because aluminum has a relatively low melting point and a high thermal conductivity, overheating can be a problem, especially on thin metal, so preheating is seldom used. The maximum preheat normally used on aluminum is 300° F (150° C). It is usually preferable to increase the voltage and current levels to obtain adequate heat input rather than use preheating. However, a preheat of 200-300" F (93-15° C) is used often when using alternating current on metal thicknesses greater than 3/16 inch (4.8 mm). Some alloys such as 5083, 5086, and 5456 should not be preheated to between 200 and 300° F (95-150° C) because their resistance to stress corrosion cracking will be reduced due to high magnesium contents Aluminum filler metal selection chart. oe ee ee eS BOR = = ae ee ee a Seren conten cr sma a ewe cl vate saue sbecke chris oa nstared igh toate 10°F (81) ray tne ace at ‘Sree Heenan EADS) SAU DOL Sn at na ecmarcs er tamed Seas prac rm egrets py shar mney Frey gone, HE OR SAE GRUB RS er age Estas, ees esas ERS ang ERSSSN my usa nana cnm ayo mre car thar ner telnet gest wes fy al hgh ned srergh, ese sabes stor cee rerun orice 15 Ghent goede non atengn nm (2mm) aa sor sve mar n OO bce loys ote ston hat eta sn sg64 "SR5eEeui anc ate 65650 ehanJo aa Rast oo sea) wot Raton 1 zeta tye 82 ae ner cope ei ERE er eae ee ng ah lyst sav epi a aed [52109 yb a sone splat Magnesium alloy classification, weldability and filler selection (1=excellent, 2=good, 3=fair, 4 =poor).
