Thesis Statement: Border restriction prevented international students from travelling to

Australia during the pandemic leading to a loss in labor and export income to universities,
landlords, and many services in major Australian cities.

Question 1: I want the reader to look at a graph where the number of students from
Australia's five main source countries of study remains on a downward trend from 2021 to
2022, with the lack of international students still showing negative growth as border
restrictions are lifted in Australia. From the second graph, I would like the reader to see the
categories of international student enrolment, with higher education accounting for over half
of the total. This shows that higher education continues to account for a high proportion of
education revenue. The third graph allows the reader to see the change in revenue for
Australian universities from 2015-2020, showing an increase from 2015 to 2019, until the
onset of the epidemic caused a significant drop in university revenue.

Question 2: These charts assume that the reader is aware that Australia is a country that is
extremely dependent on income from international education and is home to a number of
top 100 universities in the world. At the same time the reader needs to know that the highest
percentage of international students are from China.

Question 3: The graph uses data from Reserve Bank of Australia and Australian Government
Department of Education, Skills and Employment. The graph was created using Excel. The
graph required some cleaning of the data, which was done by writing a do file.
