How to Interprete and Describe Data

a. How to describe trends.

 When you interpreting graph you need to read what the two axis are about.
 Look at general features and characteristic, like the up and down trends of the data,
also add the time period.
Ex:
o If the data was going down, you can use decline, decrease, drop, etc.
o If the data was going up, you can use increase, climb, rise, etc.
 Give additional information, so the readers know the accurate description of the
trends.
 Give a detailed description by saying how things changed and by including number to
state this changes to avoid misinterpration of the graph.

b. Word and word order used in describing data

 The correct way to stating period is without using s because year is a hyphen or
compound adjective.
 Ex: he works an eight-hour a day.
 List of adverb :
o Rapidly
o Quickly
o Sharply
o Conderably
o Steadily
 List of Verb :
o Rise (+)
o Jump
o Grow
o Climb
o Fall (-)
o Drop
o Decline
o Plunge
o Say remain + constant / steady / stable / unchanged
 To describe how something happens we use verb and adverb to describe the upward,
downward, or stable trend.
 Verb is to explain “what happened?” and adverb is to explain “how did it change”
The word order is Verb + Adverb or Adjective + Noun
Ex:
o Downward The graph shows the number of books sold has dropped (Verb)
considerably (Adverb)
o Downward The graph shows a considerable (Adjective) drop (Noun) in the
number of book sold. (Beside using adverbs you can also use nouns)
o Upward The number of cars in the city increased (Verb) significantly
(Adverb) between 2010 and 2015.
o Stable Price remained (Verb) stable (Adverb) during the first six month.
