This song is about Miley Cyrus's boyfriend, actor Liam Hemsworth. She explained to
Billboard magazine, "They're going to talk about me if I come out of a restaurant with
Liam. So why not put the power back in my relationship and say, 'This is how I feel'?"
"Malibu" was announced by Miley Cyrus in her interview for Billboard magazine in May
2017, where she also said that she had been sober for three weeks prior the writing the
song, and noted that this affected the song.
