Remember to support all your solutions with clear explanations and calculations, and to care-
fully label all your figures!

1. (a) Let
x(t) = sin3 (27πt), for all t (in seconds).
Determine a formula of x(t) as the real part of a sum of complex exponentials. (3p)
(b) Sketch the spectrum of x(t) versus f in Hertz. Indicate the complex amplitude of each
frequency component at the appropriate frequencies. (2p)

2. The phase of a sinusoid can be related to time shift as follows:

x(t) = A cos(2πf0 t + φ) = A cos(2πf0 (t − t1 ))

In the following parts, assume that the period of the sinusoidal wave is T0 = 8 sec.

(a) “When t1 = −2 sec, the value of the phase is φ = π/2.”

Explain whether this is True or False. (1p)
(b) “When t1 = 3 sec, the value of the phase is φ = 3π/4.”
Explain whether this is True or False. (1p)
(c) “When t1 = 7 sec, the value of the phase is φ = π/4.”
Explain whether this is True or False. (1p)

A signal composed of sinusoids is given by the equation

x(t) = 10 cos(800πt + π/4) + 7 cos(1200πt − π/3) − 3 cos(1600πt)

(d) Is x(t) periodic? If so, what is the period? (2p)

3. The frequency response of a linear time-invariant filter is given by the formula

1 1
H(ej ω̂ ) = (1 − e−j ω̂ )(1 − ejπ/4 e−j ω̂ )(1 − e−jπ/4 e−j ω̂ )
2 2
(a) Determine and sketch the filter’s impulse response. (3p)
jφ j ω̂n
(b) If the input is of the form x[n] = Ae e , for what values of −π < ω̂ < π will
y[n] = 0 for all n? Explain! (2p)

2
4. A linear time-invariant system is described by the difference equation

y[n] = −x[n] + 2x[n − 2] − x[n − 4].

(a) What is the impulse response h[n]of this system? Sketch it. (1p)
j ω̂
(b) Determine the system’s frequency response H(e ) and express it in the polar form

H(ej ω̂ ) = r(ω̂)e−j ω̂n0

where r(ω̂) is a real-valued function and n0 is an integer. (2p)

(c) Carefully sketch and label a plot of both |H(ej ω̂ )| and ∠H(ej ω̂ ) for −π<ω̂<π. (2p)

5. Let x(t) and y(t) be the periodic continuous-time signals shown in the figure (t in seconds,
only parts of the periodic signals are plotted).

(a) True or false: "There exists an LTI system that produces output y(t) when given the
input x(t)". Explain your answer. Points are given for the explanation, not for the
mere true/false answer. (2.5p)
(b) True or false: "If you sample the signal x(t) with a sample frequency of 20 Hz you can
perfectly reconstruct the signal x(t) from its samples". Explain your answer. Points
are given for the explanation, not for the mere true/false answer. (2.5p)
