INTRODUCCTION

In this report we are going to design a hydraulic model of the river Kelantan using HEC-RAS software and discuss
the results, but before start with our discussion is essential to know a little bit about the river we are going to study
and the software we are going to use.

ABOUT HEC-RAS
Is a hydraulic modelling program based on 4 types of analysis in rivers: one-dimensional steady flow, one and
two-dimensional unsteady flow calculations, sediment transport/mobile bed computations, and water
temperature/water quality modeling. It simulates the flow in natural riverbeds or artificial channels to measure the
water level and its main purpose which is to conduct flood studies and to identify floodable regions. The software
has a user interface, independent analysis components, data storage and management capabilities, as well as
graphics and reporting tools. A major element is that all four components use a common geometric data
representation as well as common geometric and hydraulic computation routines. In addition to the four river
analysis components, the software includes additional hydraulic design elements that can be used after the water
surface profiles have been computed.(Iosub et al. 2015)

ABOUT KELANTAN RIVER

The Kelantan River basin is located in the north eastern part of Peninsular Malaysia. The river is approximately
248 km long and covers an area of 13,100 km2, which is more than 85% of Kelantan State. It separates into the
rivers Galas and Lebir near Kuala Krai, approximately 100km away from the mouth of the river.
The Kelantan River is currently being used as a water supply for four major irrigational systems: the Kemubu
River, Salor, Lemal River and the Pasir River. The existing irrigable area for these systems is around 31 000 ha,
with a maximum water consumption of roughly 72 m3/s if complete double cropping is required. As a source of
water, Kelantan River and other surface flows were sought to address both the quantitative and qualitative
limitations on groundwater usage and the fast expanding domestic and industrial demand for water in the area. The
community of this region of Malaysia are highly dependent of this river due to their economic activities that are
agricultural based: paddy rice, tobacco, oil palm and rubber. Fishing and farming are important as well in this area.

METHODOLOGY

Flow chart of the methodology using HEC-RAS

Flow simulation requires knowledge of the river geometry, boundary conditions, and basin resistance. This data i s
provided so the next step should be input the required data into the software. If everything is correct, we will able
to run HEC-RAS and check the results based on our data.(Paper 2016)

CONCLUSSION

The main purpose of the study was on evaluating the adequacy of the HEC-RAS model to simulate river Kelantan
water surface profiles. The outputs produced from the one-dimensional steady flow study using the HEC RAS
model indicate that according to the results obtained from the data given the sections 14.9, 15, 15.1, 15.2 and 15.3
of Kelantan river have their right banks more vulnerable to inundations than the other sections of the river.
