Assessment #2: Individual report and presentation

General information and reminder

This assessment is made up of two tasks: an individual report and a group presentation. This

assessment accounts for 20% of the total mark of the entire module (15% for the report and

5% for the presentation). The students are invited to work in groups of four at most max. You

must let me know the group members as soon as possible. However, each student needs to

write his/her own report while specifying his/her group in the report. The report shall not

exceed 2000 words (±𝟏𝟎% policy of KBS).

Note: The choosing of a company and writing of the individual report which makes up the

first part of the assessment should be done individually. Whilst the second part, which is the

presentation, should be done collectively with the selected group members.

Part I: Individual Written report

(To submit via Turnitin by 12noon on Wed 15th March 2023)

Individually, choose a company and discuss its warehousing management system. That is

you will have to discuss at least two aspects of warehousing and their effect on the success or

failure of the supply chain of your chosen company (e.g. warehousing processes, warehouse

layout and design, warehouse material handling, etc.) You may refer to the module slide,

module book or any other warehousing book/material for other warehousing aspects.

The report should consist of:

1) Introduction: introduce the company, its facilities (and mainly its warehouse(s)), its

competitors and briefly discuss the role of warehousing as one of the main drivers of

the company’s SC.

2) Warehouse structure: Discuss and analyse at least two aspects of warehousing that

you believe to be critical to the company’s operations and strategy (layout, packaging,

picking strategies, storage equipment, handling equipment, warehouse management

system, etc.) while briefly highlighting other ones

3) Discuss and explain the sustainability aspects in your case study.

4) Assuming you have been appointed as the warehouse manager:

a. Suggest and discuss new key strategic and operational solutions you will use

in tackling the main problems faced by the company [path 1] or “do path 2”.

b. Your task is to select the location of a new warehouse system. This location

can be either based on discrete or continuous model (a) list and justify all your

assumptions, (b) present the model formulation, (c) show the results and

discuss your decision.

5) Conclusion: concluding remarks summarising the main findings of the report.

You are encouraged to consult several sources, including the web, academic as well as

business/management journals, CILT website, but do not refer to an example from a

textbook, Google scholar etc.

Your report should be written in a way that a non-specialist will understand the main issues

of the logistical problem faced by the company and appreciate the impact warehousing has on

the company.

Your report should be submitted on Wednesday 15th March 2023 NOON.

Part II: Group Presentation

Path 1:

Share your individual reports with your group members and prepare a presentation containing

the best points of each individual report. Each group will give a 15-minute presentation by

Thursday 23th March 2023. The presentation will be marked based on content and analysis

(50%), visual skills (20%), oral skills (20%), and timing (10%).

Path 2*:

The recorded group presentation replaces the group presentation. The presentation will be

marked based on content and analysis (50%), visual skills (20%), oral skills (20%), and

timing (10%).
