Acoustic Emission (Airborne Ultrasound)
 Direct listening is naturally used by experienced operators as a means of detecting malfunction in
moving machinery.
 Rotating equipment and other plant assets emit high frequency sounds that provide clues to
potential problems. Ultrasound testing is a useful technology for a variety of applications.
 Ultrasonic, or ultrasounds, are defined as sound waves that have a frequency level within a range
of 20 to 100 kHz.
 Most rotating equipment and many fluid system conditions will emit sound patterns in the
ultrasonic frequency spectrum
 Ultrasonic detectors can be used to identify problems related to component wear as well as fluid
leaks, vacuum leaks, and steam trap failures
 A typical “direct contact” system makes contact with the surface of the equipment to provide better
transmission of the high frequency sound

Air Leaks
 Air leaks are the most expensive utility leaks in manufacturing.
 The turbulent flow of gases through a restricted orifice (i.e., leak) will produce a high frequency
signature that can easily be identified using ultrasonic techniques.
 This technique is ideal for detecting leaks in valves, steam traps, piping, and other process systems.
 A compressed air maintenance program includes a complete inspection of the air-lines three to four
times a year.
 Leaks are tagged when detected so that action can be taken.
 Regular inspections ensure that new leaks are found and confirm that tagged leaks from previous
surveys were repaired.
 Find, tag, repair, and re-check the leak area with the ultrasonic detector.

Detecting Faulty Steam Traps

 The opening and closing produces a sound that is very distinct from the normal flow.
 A direct contact probe is ideally suited for listening for correct operation.
There should be a steady sound interrupted by the distinct opening and closing of the
valve.
