Acoustic Emission (Airborne Ultrasound)
Direct listening is naturally used by experienced operators as a means of detecting malfunction in
moving machinery.
Rotating equipment and other plant assets emit high frequency sounds that provide clues to
potential problems. Ultrasound testing is a useful technology for a variety of applications.
Ultrasonic, or ultrasounds, are defined as sound waves that have a frequency level within a range
of 20 to 100 kHz.
Most rotating equipment and many fluid system conditions will emit sound patterns in the
ultrasonic frequency spectrum
Ultrasonic detectors can be used to identify problems related to component wear as well as fluid
leaks, vacuum leaks, and steam trap failures
A typical “direct contact” system makes contact with the surface of the equipment to provide better
transmission of the high frequency sound
The opening and closing produces a sound that is very distinct from the normal flow.
A direct contact probe is ideally suited for listening for correct operation.
There should be a steady sound interrupted by the distinct opening and closing of the
valve.
