I. Objectives:
By the end of the course, students will be able to:
✔revise, consolidate and extend their command of English grammar and vocabulary.
✔increase academic vocabulary specific to typical themes.
✔be accustomed to academic reading and listening skills.
✔speak with more fluency and accuracy.
✔get familiar with academic writing (sentences, paragraphs, short essays) and write different specific essay genres such as compare and contrast, cause and effect, pros
and cons.
✔ to develop their group work and problem-solving skills, as well as report writing and presentation skills.
✔ get to know IELTS exam.

N. B.: Any other relevant materials selected by the teachers are welcome. Selected practice tests are recommended if appropriate and for limited time.
IV. Teaching approach:
✔Subskills of academic English familiarization.
✔IELTS orientation and test familiarization.
✔The Learner-Centered Approach is used.
✔Lessons should be planned based on students ‘needs and their characteristics.
✔Feedback for students’ performance should also be given timely and regularly to build up their confidence and improve their performance.
✔For reading and listening lessons, students will be taught and trained with basic skills needed to deal with reading and listening activities.
✔For speaking, students’ pronunciation will be checked and corrected.
✔Pair and group-work activities should be applied and encouraged together with the individual ones.
✔Vocabulary will also be built up on the theme basis in order to improve the quality of students’ talk.
✔For writing, lessons about basic types of academic essays should be planned.
✔Academic vocabulary will be taught and provided to students to better their writing.
✔At the end of the semester, mock tests will be provided so as to help students get familiar with the real test.
V. Time distribution
75 periods – 12.5 weeks x 6 periods/week

VI. Course Policy and Assessment


✔Students have to attend at least 80% of contact hours at class and attend all the tests.
✔Students have to complete and submit tasks assigned in the online course.
✔Students have to self-study outside class hours and complete all homework and assignments before class time.
✔Students actively participate in class activities and cooperate with peers in pair and group work.
