Electronics Report for Online Practical work
Background:
Electronic Power supplies are used all around us in every type of device we see every
day.

Power supply units (PSUs) needs to be designed to provide a voltage and current at
specific levels.

This exercise will lead you to design a PSU (from theory), then apply the calculations ins
SMATH. Then a simulation version is formed in your simulation program to provide the
expected results. Once this is confirmed, you will construct and demonstrate your design
in the lab, expecting the same results as you have from the math and simulations.

Aim:
Develop your own skill and learn how to use ANY SPICE modelling software to SIMULATE
any given circuit design.

At VUT we recommend Multisim or SImetrix as it allows very versatile modelling options.

Make use of SMATH Studio and calculate all the parameter values associated in the
supplied circuit.

Source your needed hardware. You will collect most from the lab technician, and what he
does not provide you have to source yourself

Ensure it is your own work – duplicates will receive no mark

We are looking if you can

• Analyse a circuit, (Theory background)

• Simulate a circuit, (to include in the report for ONLINE submission)
• Apply SMATH to get mathematical answers (to include in the ONLINE report)
• Source the needed components (from the lab)
• Construct and then demonstrate your PSU in the lab (marks in the lab) and photo
for the report)
• Create a report based on the skills you developed (ONLINE submission)

Method:
1) Download Multisim (or any other software you want to use) and create the
circuits as per this document. The “MEASURED” sections in the table refer to your
simulated results your should retrieve from the simulation software.
2) Download and install SMATH as a mathematical tool to allow you to do
calculations where needed In the instructions and table, the “COMPUTED” sections refers
to your calculations that you need to do
3) Download the REPORT MASTER PDF and the REPORT BLANK.DOCX. This will be
your report format to compile your answers in.

If you do not follow that report format, you will receive 0%

4) Upload the final format in either DOCX or PDF format to the allocated space in
VURELA for the Rectifier Circuit

What we want in this report:
Make sure you start off with the MASTER BLANK Report format file. Include the following

headings:

Title page with correct information

Use the report template and enter your information where needed
Table of Contents
Right-click on the existing TOC, then "Update table" to allow WORD to update the
table
Plagiarism declaration page
You can do this - use this form inside the report
Experiment report number
Title of the report
Components/hardware needed
List what you are using to do this work
Software used
List the name of the software you use
give the website link where you got the software from
Circuit
Make a screen print of the circuit being run and simulated
DO NOT have any graphs in this image
Paste that screen print into your report, then re-size to fit across the page
Combined INPUT/OUTPUT waveform on a single graph (Please give ONLY the graph
and settings)
From the software, attempt to show BOTH Vin and Vout on the SAME graph
make sure you show the scales on the graph - Amplitude in Voltage (V), and
horizontally the time showing as least 3 to 6 cycles of sinewave
IF you show more than 10 cycles, you will lose marks. You will get this from
typically the Oscilloscope animations
Calculations (Where applicable)
DC parameters (paste the SMATH work here relating to DC parameters)
AC parameters (paste the SMATH work here relating to AC parameters)
All the other parameters
Comparison table (Where applicable)
Provide a table including all the parameters
Compare the value you had calculated by method of theory, with the reading from
your simulator software, with the SMATH Studio values you calculated
Photograph of your circuit the is built
Provide a large resolution, clear photograph showing your circuit
The photo SHALL include your STUDENT CARD next to the circuit (proof of
registration also accepted)
Conclusion
Describe your take on what you see, understand, how your waveforms compare
to the theory
Do you think the circuit is working well? If YES, then accept your work – if NO
then explain what you think the problem is AND provide a possible solution, with
proof (apply your changes and re-simulate)
Highlight your own experience, understanding here. How does your results
compare to that of the textbook?
Provide a reasonable application for this circuit in a real-world use. In other words,
why would it be constructed, and where would it be used.

How to get marks
Do not do anything else than what is asked. Make your Document simple. Show us the
waveforms from the simulation. Indicate the amplitude and frequency and the actual
voltages, currents and even power values.

The SMATH work should show the variable inputs, then usually the formal and the
resulting answers of the parameter calculated.

Submissions
Submit 4 file items in 1 place. Keep to the name convention used for the report file. DO
NOT ZIP

1) A photo in JPG format of your hand calculations page/s (1 images)

2) The original SIMULATION file you created
(Each circuit in the experiment may be its own file)
3) The original SMATH STUDIO file you created
4) The report in PDF

VUTela uploads can be multiple files at one place. You need to upload both the
simulations file of your circuit, as well as the report.

Do NOT ZIP – you will receive ZERO

Report:

Save/print the document into PDF format

RENAME your file to STUDENTNUMBER_SURNAME_EEELE2C_Sem1_P4.PDF

UPLOAD your unique PDF where asked for on VUTela

To upload all the files, simply select your report – then upload, Then select your

simulations file – then upload,

Then select your JPG photo file – then upload,

Then select your SMATH file – then upload,

Now you should see 4 files before submission – then SUBMIT File

And now this Experiment:

Exp 4: LM7812 Rectifier power supply unit

1) Circuit

Figure 1 shows an advanced version of the PSU. The closer you are to this design, the better your
project will work

Figure 1 LM7812 PSU

Construct a the circuit and show it to the technician.

The technician will provide you with most components – you have to tell him what your
resistor needs are based on your design

3) Use SMATH for all the calculations

4) Use SImetirx or Multisim to simulate your design

5) include all the graphs and values at the various headings in the report

6) Take a photograph of your construction and include it at the appropriate heading

in the report

7) Ensure you bring your design noted to the lab so the technician may know what
your expected output voltage will be.

8) Construction of the circuit is left for your decision and method of choice. In other
words: You decide and provide your own method of assembly of the circuit.
