Once upon a time, there was a beautiful and kind-hearted princess named Dayang Sumbi.
Her hobby was weaving cloth. One day her weaving tool fell. Tumang, a male dog, brought it
back. As she had promised herself, she married him. They had one son named Sangkuriang. He
didn‟t know that Tumang was his father because he was a dog whenever he was with him.
When Sangkuriang was twelve years old, Sumbi asked him to bring her a deer‟s heart. But
after many days in the woods, he didn‟t succeed. Not wanting to disappoint his mother, he
killed Tumang. He brought his heart home and gave it to his mother. Sumbi knew it was
Tumang‟s heart, not a deer‟s. She hit his forehead with a piece of wood angrily. She told him
to go away. Badly wounded, Sangkuriang left the village.
Years after, Sangkuriang went back to his village. There he met a beautiful woman who
was actually Sumbi. Soon, he fell in love and proposed to her. When he got closer, she saw the
bad scar on his forehead and realized that he was her own son, Sangkuriang. She told him the
truth several times, but he didn‟t believe her. To turn him down, she smartly asked him to
make her a lake and a boat in one night.
It was a small deal for Sangkuriang since he had genies to do the job before dawn. Sumbi
got so worried that she asked the villagers to burn the woods in the East. They also made
noises as if dawn was going to come soon. The genies left their work unfinished. Being
cheated on, Sangkuriang was furious. He kicked the boat so hard that it went upside down. It
gradually became a mountain. It is now known as Mount Tangkuban Perahu.

I have a number of watches in my collection, but my favorite watch is the one my
father gave me on my thirteenth birthday. I had been longing for a unique watch for quite
some time and my father finally granted my wish. It was honestly one of the finest
presents I have ever received.

batteries. The dial is round with twelve markings. The base is black and it has the brand
name embossed on it. The numbers in the dial are all fluorescent, so they emit green light
at night.
The most attractive feature of it is its extraordinary strap which is really cool and
trendy. The strap is not like that of any other ordinary watches. It does not have any holes
or buckle to strap it. It can bend on its own when applied a little pressure. I need not worry
about the durability of the strap as it is made of fine plastic. When I don‟t use the watch,
I can just round the strap and keep it safely in my cupboard.
I cannot thank my father enough for such an amazing gift. It has taught me some
important life lessons about how to use and manage my time wisely. It has made me more
punctual and shaped me into a more responsible person.

Glutinous Rice Balls in Ginger Syrup

Wedang ronde is a traditional Indonesian drink to warm you up. It is best enjoyed in
rainy seasons when the temperature dips.

INGREDIENTS
For the Ginger Syrup For the Peanut Filling
500 ml water 50 gram roasted peanut
50 gram ginger, peeled and bruised 25 gram palm sugar
2 lemongrass, bruised and knotted For the Rice Balls
2 pandan leaves (optional), knotted 100 gram glutinous rice
flour
75 gram sugar 80 - 100 ml water

INSTRUCTIONS
 Ginger Syrup
1. Combine all ingredients in a pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer
for 15 minutes.
2. Turn off the heat and strain to get a clear syrup. Divide into four serving bowls.
 Peanut Filling
1. Grind together peanut and sugar in a food processor. Set aside.
 Rice Balls
1. Place glutinous rice flour in a mixing bowl. Pour water gradually and knead
with your hands until the dough come together into a play dough like
consistency. Divide the dough into 20 portions.
2. Shape each portion into a disc, place roughly 1/2 teaspoon of peanut filling at
the center. Seal it.
3. Then, gently roll the disc into a ball. Repeat for the rest of the dough. You need
to cover the rice balls with a dampen towel to prevent them from losing
moisture.
4. Bring a pot of water to boil. Gently drop the rice balls into the boiling water and
cook until they float to the surface. Once they float for about 1 minute, remove
with a slotted spoon and place into the serving bowls. Serve immediately.

I have had bad days, but last Sunday was the worst one yet.

Since my weekend was already ruined, I decided to go outside and lay on the grass, but
after a few minutes, water started spurting up from the sprinkler heads. I got wet from head
to toe. The cute girl next door saw everything and I was so ashamed! I spent the rest of the
day sneezing and curling up in bed.
On Monday at school, my friend Matthew told me that he had accidently misspelt my
name on our last group project. He had spelt it „Badluck‟ instead of „Dalbuck‟. He had mixed
up the B and D and the L and U. Then, I realised that, maybe, it was the reason for all of my

Viruses constantly change through mutation. When a virus has one or more new mutations
it is called a variant of the original virus. Currently, the Center for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) of World Health Organization (WHO) have identified two new variants of the
virus (SARS-CoV-2) that cause coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) as variants of concern.
They are Delta and Omicron variants. Meanwhile, the previous variants i.e. the Epsilon, Kappa
and Lambda variants still continue to be monitored but are spreading at much lower levels in
several countries.
Delta variant is nearly twice as contagious as earlier variants and causes more severe
illness. The greatest risk of transmission is among unvaccinated people. People who are fully
vaccinated can get re-infected and spread the virus to others. However, those vaccinated
people spread COVID-19 for a shorter period than unvaccinated people do. While research
suggests that COVID-19 vaccines are less effective against the Delta variant, the
Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna and Janssen/Johnson & Johnson vaccines still appear to provide
protection against severe COVID-19.
On the other hand, Omicron variant might spread more easily than other variants,
including Delta. But it is not clear if Omicron causes more severe disease. It is expected that
people who are fully vaccinated likely can get re-infected and spread the virus to others. This
variant also reduces the effectiveness of some antibody treatments. To strengthen protection
against COVID-19 and circulating variants, the CDC recommends additional primary shots e.g.
Sinovac and Astra Zenecca vaccines and booster shots e.g. Moderna and Pfizer vaccines.
