Hey class!

Today we are going to talk about sustainable diets and those benefits.
Sustainable diets, by FAO (Food and agriculture organization), are those diets
with low environmental impacts which contribute to food and nutrition security and to
healthy life for present and future generations.
Thousands of people think that, only vegetarian and vegan diets are sustainable diets,
but they are absolutely wrong. Any diet can be sustainable, we only need to chose the
natural (forget the transgenic and the pre-cocked meals) , balance our diet (Chose a
regime rich in vegetables and fruit and decrease the amount of meat, fish , for
example), bet in the ecological (Include products in your diet pesticide free, for
example) and take care of the environmental ( If large transport routes are necessary
for the consumption of certain foods, try not to consume them).
Some advantages of sustainable diets are that
-it works against climate change, Global greenhouse gas emissions would drop
by 64% by 2050 if we reduced the production and consumption of food of animal
origin by 50%.
-it can protect the forests, Sustainable food production would prevent
deforestation, as less land is devoted to livestock.
-it can favors the survival of endangered species, between 20 and 40% of the
mammals and birds that could become extinct by 2060 would have some option of
surviving.
-it can preserve water resources,

Although vegetarian and vegan diets are not the only sustainable diets, these
are 2 of the most famous.
A vegetarian is, by definition, someone who basically eats grains, seeds,
vegetables, cereals and fruits, with or without the use of dairy products, honey and
eggs. Vegetarians exclude the use of all animal meats, including fish and chicken.
within vegetarians there are several groups, including vegans. This is considered
the group of "radical vegetarians". Veganism can be defined as a way of life that
refuses to contribute to all forms of exploitation and cruel treatment of animals for
food, clothing and any other purpose.

But What are the reasons that lead a person to become a vegetarian?

-ethical reasons, they consider the killing and suffering of animals for human
consumption unfair and cruel, because of the violence that this process involves.
-Health reasons, prevention of diseases such as obesity, high cholesterol levels,
cardiovascular diseases, hypertension, some types of cancer and digestion problems
-environmental reasons
-religious reasons

However, just like any other diet, when the diet is unbalanced or too restrictive, there
can be disadvantages. In the case of regimens of this nature, there is an increased risk
of developing anemia for example. Ideally, vegetarian dieters should be accompanied
by a doctor and nutritionist.
In conclusion, sustainable diets bring numerous benefits to the environment and
contribute to a future in which people live in harmony with nature.
