Course Description
This course provides students with a background on the principles of effective technical writing in
order to equip them with the skills set needed to write technical reports, descriptions of graphic
illustrations (i.e. maps, pie charts, process/flow chart, table, functions of a mechanism/how
something works, bar/line graphs), business letters and emails for internal workplace
communications as well as external business-to-business and business-to-consumer
communications, end-user guides and manuals, and research abstracts using the appropriate
style, format and tone that resonate with the intended audience/reader.
Course Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, the students should be able to:

CLO1: distinguish technical writing from other forms of writing;


CLO2: practice essential writing techniques that produce easy-to-read and easy-to-understand
technical documents;
CLO3: construct different kinds of technical documents in a clear and concise manner
employing the proper styles of citing sources;
CLO4: identify their target audience and craft documents that resonate with that audience using
the appropriate style, format and tone;
CLO5: appreciate the value of developing technical writing skills as a necessary tool to succeed
in the workplace.

avoided when writing technical papers.

intellectual property laws as applied in academic
writing.
Topic 3 – Citing Sources Using APA LO1: Distinguish between MLA and APA styles of

through varied writing exercises.
Topic 4 – Describing Graphic LO1: Identify the different types of graphic illustrations

Midterm Grade = FA (70%) + SuA (30%)
