Has Anyone Ever

Had an Original
Thought?
Inquiry Presentation by Hesha Jaranilla

Definitions
What is A Thought?
noun : an idea or opinion produced by thinking, or occurring suddenly in
the mind

- “mental process” which keeps roaming around the mind

What is Originality?
- The adjective of something that is “happening or existing first or at the
beginning”

- Also defined as something “made or produced first : not a copy, translation,
etc”

- the dictionary also provides a third definition, where it states that
Originality is “not like others”, it is “new, different, and appealing”

It’s Important to ASk….
What is a thought?

What constitutes originality?

How does the Brain conduct creative and original
thoughts?

“creativity is our ability to think in new and original ways to solve

problems But not every original solution is considered a creative one If
the idea is not fully applicable it is not considered creative, but simply one
which is unreasonable ”

- Dr Naama Mayseless from the Department of Psychology at the
University of Haifa

In their Study…
The researchers hypothesized that for a creative idea to be produced, the brain must
activate a number of different -- and perhaps even contradictory -- networks

In the first part of the research,

 In the second part,

- respondents were given half a - respondents were then asked to give,
minute to have new, original within half a minute, their best
and unexpected idea for the characteristic and accepted
use of different objects
 description of the objects

- Answers that came up

infrequently received a high

score for originality, while
those given frequently received
a low score

In their STudy

During the tests, all subjects were scanned using an FMRI device to
examine their brain activity while providing the answer
What was their analysis?
● Found : that this region did not
● More brain activity was operate alone when an original
found in an "associative" answer was given

region, whose originality
was high
 ● worked in collaboration with the
associative region : administrative
● This region :
 control region

- includes the anterior
medial brain areas
 ● This was a "conservative" region

related to social norms and rules
- works in the background
when a person is not
concentrating, similar to
daydreaming

Creativity vs Originality
Not everything Creativity- in any platform-
that’s creative

There are many fields in which existing works

people put forth many creative

Creativity
● In business,

- Innovation : companies take existing ideas and create products inspired by those
ideas

In technology, the products that Apple, Google, and Samsung make are based on the
ideas and sometimes expired patents of many people who came before them

When Steve Jobs, fist came out with the Iphone, a cell phone was already invented
Someone had already invented a device that could make a phone call or send a text
message However, what Jobs did, was create an innovative idea, something considered
revolutionary of its time, because of the sleek design of the Iphone

This “soft keyboard” or touch screen dominated the industry compared to the
traditional keyboards with physical buttons that people would use to type and navigate
their screens

Creativity

Originality
● Originality is about being first – you are the “owner” or “inventor” of the
“original work ”

● A creative act, on the other hand, doesn’t have to be first, it just has to be
different

- When the Beatles introduced rock and roll, it was a creative approach to music
Their creative process was significantly influenced by American Blues artists
They weren't the owner or the first to create rock they were, however, the first
to put their own spin to it They took rock and roll to a creative approach

Originality
● Originality is about being first – you are the “owner” or “inventor” of the
“original work ”

● A creative act, on the other hand, doesn’t have to be first, it just has to be
different

Originality
● Originality means to develop a
completely new idea, something that
has never been done before

- But did you know that Disney’s

Saludos Amigos, a story of Walt’s
characters, set in South America,
was the sixth movie from Walt
Disney Animation Studios, and
the first original movie, in 1942

Pinocchio is not disney
UN-Original
Pinocchio was actually first seen
and invented by the Italian author
Carlo Collodi of Florence,
Tuscany, in, The Adventures of
Pinocchio, his 1883 children’s
novel It was his story about a little
wooden puppet that inspired the
Disney animated film

Plato and the cave
The allegory of the cave

● The “Allegory of The Cave” was a theory by - These two ideas ultimately reflect the two worlds
Plato concerning human perception
inside the story, the one inside the cave, and the one

outside of the cave In the story, there was a prisoner
- Plato characterizes people who interpret of the cave The escaped prisoner represents the
knowledge for what they see is the truth and Philosopher who gains knowledge outside the cave
people who see the truth and gain knowledge through his experiences on finding truth and
through philosophical reasoning
 wisdom

- Plato uses the cave as a symbolic representation - The escaped prisoner then returns to the cave with
of how human beings live in the world, knowledge of the outside world The reaction of the
contrasting reality versus our interpretation of it
other prisoner represents how people can fear

knowledge and the parts of the metaphysical
differences between reality and illusions

Plato and the cave
The allegory of the cave

Those who
walked away
from the cave had now this way of thought It
was new and different to them which allowed
them to have this original mindset compared to
those who were living in the cave When we
step out of our bubble and away from the
communities that bore us, we find our own
individuality, our own originality, and we
become our own people

Why?
Why must we know what constitutes originality or
creativity? Or why must we distinguish if anyone
ever an original thought?

Why?
As a growing and evolving society,
modern technology and creative
exchange allow for individuals to
communicate That itself, is a great
thing because it allows for new
opportunities

That said, it also is very easy to copy
other people’s creative or original work

Though originality is harder to
determine, it’s important to give credit
to when it is due

Ultimately
How originality comes to play
As a result, though we might not know who ever had
the first original thought, we know of scientists who
were the first to discover, inventors who were the first
to create, and philosophers who were the first to
wonder

As young, learners and educators, it is up to us to do
whatever we will with the knowledge that we were left
behind and given

That is when creativity comes to play, and it is when
we can put our own touch to these already existing
ideas to create something new and original
