ASSIGNMENT
SEM-6TH (ODD)

UNIT-5
ASSIGNMENT SHEET NO. 1

Subject Name: Special Electrical Machines Subject Code: REE-064

1. Discuss the modifications necessary to operate a dc series motor satisfactorily on

single phase ac supply.
2. Explain the constructional feature, principle of operation, application, & torque-
speed characteristics of Universal Motor. Also derive the rotational & transformer
emf equations.

3. What is the difference between Universal Motor & Induction Motor? List out some
applications of linear induction motor.
4. A universal motor has its 2 poles with 960 conductors. At a certain load, the motor
speed is 5000rpm & the armature current is 4.6A. The armature terminal voltage
and power are 100V & 300W respectively. Compute (i) Effective armature
reactance (ii) Maximum value of flux/pole, if armature resistance of 3.5Ω.
5. In a linear induction motor, if the pole pitch is 15 0, supply frequency is 50 Hz and
the speed of the secondary is 1350m/sec. calculate the value of linear synchronous
speed (Vs) and the slip.

6. Explain the operation of DC series motor when connected to an AC source and also
draw the phasor diagram of a single phase series motor.
7. A Universal motor has a total resistance of 25 Ω and a total inductance of 0.2H. The
motor runs at 1000 rpm, when connected to a 220 V dc source and it draws 1A.
Determine the speed, torque and power factor, when connected to a 220 V, 50 Hz
source & it draws the same current.
