GENERAL ‘The Portable Analysis Unit (17TESO010) and Portable Printer Unit (17TESO020) are integral com- ponents of the second generation Loral Ground Support Equipment, (GS/2). The GS/? functions as a direct replacement for the Apple-based ground station and consists of a Portable Analysis Unit, a Ground Station Read—Out Center (ROC) computer, and maintenance options. The PAU is designed to monitor, analyze and extract recorded flight data from the Solid State Flight Data Recorder (SSFDA), Loral's Fairchild Model No. F1000, without removing the unit from the ai ‘craft. The PAU uses a lightweight laptop or notebook type computer while the PU is a standard portable, 9pin, dot-matrix, 80—column parallel printer, This revision of the PAU CMM supports all versions up to version 1.5 of the GS/2 application software. Material has been added to the GMM regarding the description, operation, theory, and parts isting for the new features of the GS/2 system. Additionally, Appendix C has been added to this manual which provides technical and operational information for the GS/2 Tape Adapter Cable (TAC). The TAC is used to interface the PAU to tape—based digital flight recorders. ‘A. Applicable PAU Models Since its introduction, the PAU has been developed with three different models of portable computers as follows: (1) Toshiba T1600 (PIN: 253E05438—-00): 40 MB Hard Disk with 2/4 MB RAM (effective for PAU S/N: 00001 through S/N: 00048). (2) Toshiba T2000 (P/N: 253E0541 —00): 40 MB Hard Disk with 3 MB RAM (effective for PAU S/N 00049 through S/N: 00185). (3) Dell 325N (P/N: 253E0880—00): 80 MB Hard Disk with 4 MB RAM (effective for PAU SIN 00186 and above). Note: Dell 325N was chosen as PC Magazine Editors’ Choice for portable computers against 80 other vendors in the August 1992 edition, p.194. B. Applicable Documents ‘Since the PAU and PPU are used in conjunction with the SSFDR and ROC computer and contain other manufacturers’ equipment as integral components, the following documents are recommended to fully understand the function, operation and maintenance of these units. General Description ‘The Portable Analysis Unit, PAU, is a compact, highly portable Flight Data Recorder test unit with data read circuitry and an advanced programmable computer for data analysis. Section 1: Description Page 1 Rev 1: Sept. 21, ‘93, Data Systems/Aviation Recorders COMPONENT MAINTENANCE MANUAL FAIRCHILD MODEL GS/2-PAU, PPU, TAC ‘The PAU is designed for use while the flight data recorder is mounted in the aircraft. The PAU connects to the ATE connector on the front of the SSFDR and can extract real-time Gata of previously recorded data for verification of recordér and sensor functions. When used with the optional Portable Printer Unit (PPU), a hard copy printout is available for his- torical records; therefore, removing the recorder for operational checks is not required. The PAU can display data in raw form (octal, hexadecimal, decimal, binary), or engineering units, Ny). When using the T1600 (P/N: 253€0541—00) and T2000 (P/N: 253E0554—00) communica tions between the PAU and SSFDR are routed through a RS~422 interface card. For the ‘Dell A25NC (P/N: 253£0881—00) communications between the PAU and SSFDR ATE con- nector are routed through the parallel printer port using a PCC cable assembly (P/N: (024E041-00) Note: For the Dell 395N configuration data extraction through the parallel printer port prevents the simultaneous use of the printer. Thus, hardcopy printout of ‘aircraft parameter reports cannot be done during the flight data copy process. B. Mechanical Characteristics ‘The T1600 (P/N: 253E0541—00) and T2000 (P/N: 253E0624—00) configurations use a modi- fied portable computer encased in a hardened suitcase compartment. The computers employ 4—Mbytes and 3-Mbytes of resident memory, respectively, uid a 40—Mbyte hard disk with a parallel connection for interfacing with an 80—column printer. General ‘The TAC is used to test and validate the installation of the F800 DFR on a new aircraft, or to copy data from the F800 DFR to the GS/2 support equipment. The software driven features of the TAC have been designed to emulate the features of a Fairchild Read Data Unit (RDU). Additionally, when used with a PAU, the TAC directly replaces the Fairchild Portable Data Display Unit (PDDU). ‘Tho TAC ie a cable ascombly which incorporates an encapsulated Printed Wiring Assembly (PWA). The TAC connects a tape DFR's ATE connector to the parallel port of the Fairchild PAU. The TAC can also be connected to the GS/2 Read—Out Center/2 (ROC/2) computer. The operation of the TAC using the GS/2 software is accomplished with keyboard actuated selections. Other than the function key generated pop-up menu and a TAC status mes- sage located in the upper right-hand comer of the GS/2 menu presentation, the GS/2 soft- ware operates as described in the ROC/2 and PAU component maintenance manuals. When used with the PAU, the TAC has three major purposes: 1. Installation Validation: Operators check agreement between the DFR data and the cockpit instrument readings one instrument at a time. 2. Certification Flights: After the installation has been approved. a certification flight must take place. The TAC can be used with the PAU to ‘copy the certification fight data so the user can provide a printout of the entire certification flight record as read from tape. 3. Annual Verification: Operators can check aircraft instrumentation and DFR op- ‘eration on a yearly basis. A copy of pre-recorded fight data can be accomplished so that the annual verification can be approved. ————— SDE view J ™ m a oil Ws =I} {| (= yy [ Tor VIEW “Tape Adaptor Cable pin 25350878~00 —————_ orrweam i ‘TAC-to-FDR Cable pin 048E0876~00 ET Tape Adapter Cable (TAC) Figure 6a.
