Paragraph Assignment

Over a millennium separates the writings of Hroswitha and Maria Menocal, but
they both describe medieval Spain as an “ornament.”

Menocal assumes that Hroswitha employs this term positively and uses it as such,
highlighting how Spain “transcended differences of religion.
” Menocal’s ornament depicts a Spain that added to the culture of contemporary and
medieval society because of its unique interaction between three monotheistic religions.-change

However, Hroswitha’s definition greatly differs from this idealistic view of an enriching
culture due to religious tolerance. This can be derived from the rest of her text, where she
outlines the tragic murder of a Christian prince by the ruling Islamic king. Hroswitha describes
Cordova as “a fair ornament” in a positive way, emphasizing its Spanish and Christian history.
Yet, this tone quickly changes as she introduces “the treacherous tribe of the savage Saracens”
and emphatically denounces the ruling party throughout her work.
Therefore, the Menocal’s concept that Hroswitha refers to the culture of religious
tolerance as being the “ornament of the world” has little evidence. Instead, Hroswitha only
valued the Christian and Spanish aspects of medieval Spain, while Menocal valued the
integration of an abundance of culture.
