Dramatic irony and Macbeth

In Macbeth, many irony was used throughout the play to make the viewers in tension. For instance,
in scene three act one, when the witches told Macbeth, “You will be thane of Cawdor, “Duncan
called Macbeth with Thane of Cawdor. The audience already knew the situation but the characters
don't and Macbeth believes in the prophecy of witches. And when Macbeth and all his guests wait
for Banquo. Macbeth knew that he sent men for his murder, but other characters are unaware of
this. Another example is when Macbeth talks with the ghost of Banquo. All guests contemplate him
as a confused man. They thought he needs some rest. In this situation, the audience knows why
Macbeth behaved like this while the other characters are not aware. Another irony that is used in the
play is when Macbeth murdered Duncan while the other characters still thought him a sincere and
truthful man. Other examples include when lady Macbeth started sleepwalking and murmuring and
washed her hands daily because of her guilt. Hence, the only audience knows that she's doing this
for the guilt of Duncan’s death, while other characters in the play think that Lady Macbeth has
become agitated. Without add of irony in Macbeth, would lead this play in lacking suspense and the
audience might get bored.
