KALEIDOSCOPE
EYES

In 2017, Katahj Copley premiered his first work, Spectra and has’t stopped

composing since. Over his 6 years of composing, he wrote over 100 pieces that were

composed for different types of ensembles, such as chamber ensembles, large

ensembles, wind ensembles, and orchestras. His compositions have been performed

and commissioned by universities, organizations, and professional ensembles. Katahj

received two Bachelor of Music degrees from the University of West Georgia in Music

Education and Composition and is currently studying composition with Omar Thomas at

the University of Texas.

Kaleidoscope Eyes is a visual effect creating mirages, splashes of colors, and

moments of confusion. For some time, Katahj was fascinated by kaalidoscopes. He

loved the idea of different patterns and ideas being molded with extraordinary colors to

create unique moments in time and wanted to explore that in music. When Katahj

learned about this, he knew what he wanted to do. Katahj wanted to manipulate rhythm

and color changes within the wind band.
