Case Study: Impatient Parents

Part 1: Case Analysis

1. Brief summary of the case:

 The case study is about an upset parent, Mrs. Lemming, who has come to the
school to report that her daughter is being harassed by a male student in her class.
Mrs. Lemming is upset with the situation, doesn’t have a lot of time to speak, and
expects me to solve the issue with her daughter and classmate. Additionally, Mrs.
Lemming is upset about not hearing back from her daughter’s teacher about this
situation.
2. Identify the issues to be resolved:
 The issue to be resolved is Mrs. Lemming’s concern about a male classmate
harassing her daughter by making fun of her clothes, and possibly calling and
texting her from an unknown number.
3. Stakeholders involved in the issues:
 The parent, Mrs. Lemming, and her daughter
 The male student in question
4. One or two existing laws or court rulings that relate to the issues:
 A.R.S. § 15-341(A)(36) – a law requiring schools to have policies and procedures

to prevent bullying and harassment at schools

5. District policies that relate to the issues:

 Section J Students – Student Bullying/Harassment/Intimidation (Laveen
Elementary School District, 2012)
6. Possible solutions to the issues:
 Talk to the teachers and let them resolve the issue
 Talk to the students in question, the teacher, and any other appropriate personnel
and report back to the parent
 Wait to address it another time and schedule a meeting with the parent
7. The solution you chose to resolve the issues:
 I have chosen to begin addressing the issue now by speaking with all the students
involved and then reporting my actions to the upset parent.

8. Action steps (2-5) for implementing your solution, including a timeline for each step:
 The day of, I would speak with Mrs. Lemming’s daughter to get further details.
 After speaking with the daughter, I would bring in the boy/s being identified and
speak with them
 Do my best to figure out what is happening, and address the issues happening on
campus
 If I find out the same boys are the ones doing the online contacting then I will
speak to their parents as well regarding their actions
 Assign disciplinary actions as needed
9. Potential moral and legal consequences of the solution:
 I want all student to be comfortable and feel safe on my campus. It is my
obligation to ensure school is a safe place to learn for everyone.
 If bullying continues and I don’t do anything about the issue, Mrs. Lemming
could report my action/inaction to the district and I may have reprimands

Part 2: Rationale

The solution that I have chose for this case study is to address the issue immediately. I
believe that getting started on finding out the details is an important first step. My first action
step would be to bring in Mrs. Lemmings daughter to get further details that Mrs. Lemming was
unable to provide. Important details that I would be searching to find would be when the bullying
is occurring, any antecedent, if it has previously been reported or noted, and how long it has been
occurring. As for the issue regarding the phone calls/messages, that may be a bit tougher to
resolve.

After address the issue with the student, I would then ask to speak with the other boys
involved. The taunting that is happening should be something simple to resolve. Disciplinary
action for something like this may include lunch detention. The greater issue would be to figure
out if the same boys are the ones doing the phone calls/messages. After speaking with the
student/s about the taunting, I would address the issue regarding the phone calls. It may be an
issue that I would get support from the school resource officer (if available) to help solve. The
parents of these students may also need to be contacted and possibly set up meetings to discuss
this issue.

My immediate solution would be for Mrs. Lemming’s daughter to block the number/s
that are calling and leaving messages. All of the conversations with the students would be
documented and any contacts home would also be noted to have a record of the issue being
addressed. By the end of the day I would contact Mrs. Lemming’s back and let her know that I
have addressed the issue with her daughter and her peers and that disciplinary action has been
taken to the parties involved. I would that if any further situation continues to occur to please set
a meeting with me or email me with all the possible details to be able to continue assisting her.
