EXPERIMENT 1
Density of an Unknown Liquid

Purpose:

The purpose of this experiment is to study the distribution of a solute between two immiscible
solvents.

Procedure Requirement/s*:

The procedure of the experiment should:

1. show how to use the pycnometer for this experiment;


2. be divided into two parts: part A for the determination of the volume of the pycnometer and part
B for the determination of the density of an unknown liquid provided by the instructor;
3. show the calculations needed to obtain the density of the unknown sample; and
4. have five (5) trials for part A, and five (5) trials for part B.

EXPERIMENT 2
The Molecular Weight of Gases: Modified Method of Dumas

Purpose:

The purpose of this experiment is to study the determination of the molecular weight of a volatile
substance by the method of Dumas.

Procedure Requirement/s*:

The procedure of the experiment should:

1. use Dumas’ method (or an alternate glassware if the bulb is not available) in the experiment;
2. utilize of the ideal gas equation of state, pV = nRT to obtain the molecular weight of the unknown
sample;
3. have two (2) parts: first is for the reference sample, and the second is for the unknown sample
provided by the instructor; and
4. have three (3) trials for part A, and three (3) trials for part B.

EXPERIMENT 3
Viscosity: Ostwald Viscosimeter Method

Purpose:

The purpose of this experiment is to study the determination of the viscosity of liquids by means
of the Ostwald viscosimeter method.

Procedure Requirement/s*:

The procedure of the experiment should:

1. use the Ostwald viscosimeter in the experiment;


2. utilize a modified equation for obtaining the relative viscosity of a substance at a given
temperature;
3. have two (2) parts: first is for water, and the second is for the unknown sample provided by the
instructor; and
4. have five (5) trials for part A, and five (5) trials for part B.

EXPERIMENT 4
Molecular Weight: Freezing-Point Method

Purpose:

The purpose of this experiment is to study the determination of the molecular weight of non-
volatile solutes by the freezing-point-depression method.

Procedure Requirement/s*:

The procedure of the experiment should:

1. use the freezing-point apparatus;


2. show the derivation of the equation used for this experiment from the freezing-point-depression
relation ΔT𝑓 = K𝑓 m;
3. be divided into two parts: one for the determination of the freezing point of the pure solvent and
one for the determination of the freezing point of a solution containing the same solvent from part
A and a sample of a solute;
4. have five (5) trials for part A, and five (5) trials for part B; and
5. include the steps in constructing a cooling curve.

EXPERIMENT 5
Heat of Neutralization: Calorimetric Procedure

Purpose:

The purpose of this experiment is to study the quantity of heat evolved when 1 mole of a strong
base, sodium hydroxide, is neutralized with an acid.

Procedure Requirement/s*:

The procedure of the experiment should:

1. illustrate how to use the Dewar flask in the experiment;


2. show the derivation of the equation used for this experiment from the heat capacity equation;
3. be divided into two parts: part A for the determination of the heat capacity for the calorimeter
system and part B for the determination of the heat of neutralization (per mole) of the reaction;
and
4. have three (3) trials for part A, and three (3) trials for part B.

EXPERIMENT 6
Heat of Combustion: Hess’s Law

Purpose:

The purpose of this experiment is to study the quantity of heat of combustion of a metal using the
principles of Hess’s Law.

Procedure Requirement/s*:

The procedure of the experiment should:

1. illustrate how to use the Dewar flask/coffee cup setup in the experiment;
2. be divided into three parts: part A for the determination of the heat capacity for the calorimeter
system and part B for the metal, and part C for the metal oxide;
3. use Hess’s Law to obtain the heat of combustion of a metal sample; and
4. have three (3) trials for part A, B, and C.

EXPERIMENT 7
Adsorption

Purpose:

The purpose of this experiment is to study the adsorption by activated carbon of a solute from an
aqueous solution.

Procedure Requirement/s*:

The procedure of the experiment should:

1. utilize titration methods;


2. be divided into two parts: part A for the standardization of the concentrations of solutions and
part B for the experiment proper;
3. show the steps for constructing the Freundlich adsorption isotherm; and
4. have three (3) trials for part A, and one (1) trial for part B.
