SCRIPT
EXT. BENCH BY RIVER (EVENING/SUNSET)
MUSIC- SPACE SONG BY BEACH HOUSE
The energy of this scene is hazy and calm, with a rhythmic song
playing in the background. 2 teenage girls are sat on a bench
looking out to the river. The purple haired girl, EVELYN MONROE,
looks over to face the other, ANAYA BURTON, with a slightly
uneased smile. Anaya appears confident and uplifted, whilst
Evelyn is nervous and fidgety.

ANAYA (V.O)

That’s me, Anaya. Beside me sits a friend, an old

friend of mine. To be honest I never thought we
would get to this point, but here we are.

EXT. COLLEGE CAMPUS (DAYTIME)

Anaya is walking up a hill with her school stuff in hand, she
has a nervous facial expression and is looking around at the
campus. She looks up to see Evelyn at the top of the hill, who
is laughing and talking to someone else, and Anaya’s facial
expression softens with hope to find a new friend.

ANAYA (V.O)

Evelyn Monroe was my best-friend, she was my rock

throughout the difficult years of high school.

When Evelyn notices her, she waves for her to come over with a
smile.

INT. COLLEGE CORRIDORS

Evelyn is guiding Anaya through the college; they walk down a
corridor and are chatting and laughing. When they stop at
Evelyn's classroom, she hugs her and leaves to enter through the
door.

ANAYA
From the very first day, I believed that this was a
friendship that would last.

EXT. A HILL (AFTERNOON)

The 2 girls are wearing backpacks, with a picnic blanket tied
around Evelyn’s. They are walking up a hill and Anaya struggles
a bit, this is where Evelyn offers her a hand and the 2 make it
to the top.

2
ANAYA
Being in Lynn’s company was fun and exciting. She
was so brave and adventurous.
EXT. RIVER PIER (AFTERNOON)
The two are sat on a pier overlooking a river. Evelyn is
smoking a cigarette and passes it to Anaya.

ANAYA
She was also different to the friends I’d had in the
past. She felt so much more, real.

EXT. TOP OF A HILL (AFTERNOON)

This scene continues from when the girls were backpacking. We
see now that they were climbing to the top to set up a picnic,
the blanket for earlier is laid out on the floor with snacks
and drinks spread out over it.

ANAYA
I bonded with her quickly- trusted her completely.
It was so easy to open up to her: she knew me inside
out in what felt like no time at all. She pushed and
inspired me so much when it came to my passion,
which was photography.

The scene fades out into an echo, the music begins to fade as
well.

EXT. TOP OF THE HILL (EVENING)

Anaya is sat in the same location, however alone. The energy of
this scene is polar opposite to the previous exciting and fun
situation. The lighting is cold and Anaya has an empty facial
expression.

ANAYA
And when it got too much, she pushed me out of her
life.

Fast-paced rewind effect occurs that cycles through their

whole friendship, zoning into the negative parts of the
friendship.

EXT. SKATEPARK (EVENING)

A scene from the time that the girls were partying with other
friends, an intimate shot of evelyn and anaya talking.

EVELYN
Naya you need to chill, you’re kinda ruining the
vibe.

3
ANAYA
Yeah, you’re right, sorry.

EXT. COLLEGE CLASSROOM

A medium shot of the 2 sat at a desk with their classwork out
in front of them, ambient sound of the classroom in the
background. Anaya is talking, trying to gossip.

ANAYA
So, she did all of that, she led him on, and then
just told him that she didn’t even like him?

Evelyn nods but doesn’t respond.

ANAYA
I’m just like sure yeah okay, sleep with a guy first
and then tell him that he’s not your type.

Evelyn begins to put earphones in, before she puts the second
one in anaya speaks again.

ANAYA
You get me, right? That’s just stupid.

EVELYN (disinterested)
Yeah, yeah… that’s mental.

EXT. BRICK WALL

The friends are sat on top of a wall during a break. They are
sharing a pair of earphones and lip-syncing/ singing softly to
the song. Evelyn takes out a pack of cigarettes.

ANAYA
Can I roll one too?

Evelyn reacts in an unusual way, which surprises anaya. She

doesn’t appear as happy to share, inhales sharply, but still
hands one over.

ANAYA
Thanks…

EVELYN
No problem.

4
ANAYA (V.O)
There was a shift in our friendship, yet I couldn’t
figure out where it came from. It seemed like she
just got bored of me.

EXT. UNSPECIFIED STREET

A shot of Evelyn looking agitated, rolling her eyes and
shaking her head.

EVELYN (in a frustrated tone)

I just need a break. I need some space from you.

Dolly zoom centred shot of Anaya’s face, emphasising the shock

and confusion on her face.

ANAYA (speechless)
Uh… I… Mhm.

ANAYA (v.o)
Where did this come from? What did I do? What the fuck?

EXT. AROUND THE SKATEPARK (EVENING)

Anaya is walking around alone, continued from the scene
beforehand. Her hood is up and her mood is low.

ANAYA (V.O)
I was in total shock. I didn’t want to believe that
she meant what she said.

INT. ANAYA’S BEDROOM (MORNING)

Anaya wakes up in her bed to the sound of her alarm blaring. She
gets up and out of bed, walking to her bathroom. She stares at
herself in her bathroom mirror for a while, observing her smudged
eye makeup- since she was crying the night before. She starts
getting ready for school by washing her face and brushing her
hair. As she is heading for the door, her mum is heard speaking
off-screen.

ANAYA’S MUM

Naya you left your camera!

ANAYA

I don’t need it.

ANAYA’S MUM

5
Don’t you have a shoot today?

ANAYA

Just don’t worry about it mum!

Anaya walks out and slams the door behind her.

EXT. BUS STOP (CONTINUED)

Anaya is sitting alone at the bus stop with her headphones in.

ANAYA (v.o)

I didn’t my camera because I wasn’t actually going

to school. I couldn’t face her after how we ended
things. Correction- how she ended things.

EXT. PARK BENCH

Anaya is sat up on a bench with her head resting on her knees,

a blank expression to be seen on her face.

ANAYA (v.o)

Instead, I spend the day reflecting. I considered

all the ways that I messed things up: I was too
clingy, and in Evelyn’s words I was just too much.

Anaya is walking through the park with the same solemn facial
expression

ANAYA (v.o)

I thought and I thought until absolute exhaustion. I

had lost all of my motivation.

Anaya closes her eyes and the screen turns black.

INT. ANAYA’S BEDROOM (MORNING)

Anaya wakes up to her alarm blaring again. A title card shows

that this is a week after the day that we had just seen. Her
room is messy, her face is tired even after a night of sleep.
She walks into her bathroom and does nothing to get ready
besides tie her hair up and out of her face.

INT. KITCHEN

Anaya is sat at her kitchen table with a bowl of cereal in

front of her. She just stares at it, she doesn’t eat.

6
ANAYA’S MUM (off-screen)

Are you going to school today?

Anaya shakes her head.

ANAYA’S MUM

Okay. I will email your teachers.

INT. LIVING ROOM

Anaya is laying on her couch watching TV with the same solemn

expression.

ANAYA (v.o)

I had no energy. I was stuck, wallowing in this

state of misery. It felt so dramatic, even stupid.
But I was too tired to let myself do anything but.

Anaya shuts her eyes again.

INT. ANAYA’S HOUSE (MORNING)

Anaya wakes up in her bedroom to her alarm. The shots in this

sequence are fast paced. She stands in her bathroom mirror;
she sits at her kitchen table with a sad looking piece of
toast on her plate; she sits in the corner of her kitchen
staring up at the ceiling; she lays on the couch watching TV.

INT. ANAYA’S BEDROOM (evening)

Anaya is sat up in her bed watching a YouTube video on her

laptop. She is seen smiling a little, comforted and distracted
by it. An email notification pops up mentioning a photography
award. When she opens it, her face lights up with shock at the
email’s contents: “CONGRATULATIONS! Your work has been chosen
for presentation at the 2022 Young Photographer’s Awards!”

Anaya begins to laugh in surprise and looks over at her camera

back. A pull focus shot from her body to the bag that is
covered with a hoodie. This shot is held whilst Anaya runs off
screen to tell her mum

ANAYA

MUM you will never believe this!

7
ANAYA’S MUM

What, what is it?

ANAYA

I got this email from school, and they want to

showcase my work! I have to start fixing my
portfolio as soon as…!

The dialogue trails off into an echo.

EXT. CENTRE OF TOWN (daytime)

Anaya is seen carrying her camera and taking photos of the

environment around her. She has a proud smile on her face and
is examining her location to find the best shots.

ANAYA

I can’t begin to describe the feeling of getting

recognised for my work. I almost felt brand new?

INT. PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIO

Anaya and a model are in the studio. She sets up the lights
for the shoot and directs her model to pose for her concepts.
We see side by side the real-life movement of the model and
the final, edited photos. Anaya appears proud and focused.

INT. MEDIA SUITE

Anaya is editing her photos on the computer in photoshop.

MODEL

That’s amazing! That’s the best one!

ANAYA

I completely agree.

INT. HALLWAY

Anaya’s final image is printed out and stuck up on a wall

alongside other students’ work. She is looking up at the image
with a big smile on her face.

8
ANAYA

I couldn’t fathom the progress that I made in just a

few weeks. I felt so incredibly proud. I had no
other thoughts; I had even forgotten how badly I’d
previously felt.

Anaya turns her head. Evelyn is seen at the end of the hallway
with an awkward look on her face. Anaya’s smile fades.

ANAYA

Until I was reminded.

EXT. HILLSIDE BENCH (DAYTIME)

The 2 girls are reunited, sitting on a bench that we had seen

at the very beginning of the short film. Evelyn looks to face
Anaya, her facial expression is nervous. Anaya appears
completely calm.

EVELYN

I’m grateful that you let me apologise.

Anaya looks ahead with no response.

EVELYN

And I understand if you don’t forgive me: I treated

you awfully. I don’t want to give you a sob story,
but I was going through so much. Even so, you truly
didn’t deserve it.

Anaya looks to face her as well, with a soft smile on her

face.

ANAYA

You’re right, I didn’t deserve it. Yet I did depend

on you a whole lot and trust me I have judged myself
hard for it. I do forgive you Evelyn, because I
forgive myself.

Evelyn smiles back at her. A closeup shot on Anaya’s hand

resting on top of Evelyn’s. A final long shot of the 2 staring
out into the fields.

CONTINGENCY PLANS

Potential Problem How to resolve

An actor is ill/ suddenly unavailable I have a backup actress who would
be willing to undertake both roles.

Bad weather on the day of filming On the college campus, I could easily
find sheltered locations to replace
my current ideas. When it comes to
outdoor locations, I wouldn’t be able
to avoid the problem. This makes me
aware to be up to date with weather
forecasting and to prioritise filming
the outdoor scenes whenever the
weather is nice.
Technical problems with camera, sd I have previously had issues with
card, or other equipment. footage due to my sd card and
therefore have replaced it. It would
also be a good idea to have a back
up card, and the camera that I use
has slots for 2. I need to confirm with
my teacher when I get my borrowed
equipment that I know exactly how
to use it- minimising the risk of
damage or poor outcomes.
Running out of time to film Over the Easter holidays I have a lot
of work shifts, in addition to one of
my actors being a co-worker that
also undertakes a lot of hours. I have
requested to assign us more shifts
together in order to maximise time
that we can film. I also need to
produce a clear timetable according
to my actors availabilities in order to
know when I can be filming.
