Water Pump Test Performance
Water Pump Test Performance
and
Division: Maintenance
Department: Mechanical Engineering Team
Advisers:
1. Introduction
First issue:
A work order had been created by the exploitation team to the mechanical team to do an
intervention on 06-p-531-B which had tripped several times because of overload in its
electrical motor.
Second issue:
After the intervention had been done by the mechanical team to find out the original
source of the Failure and the pump tripe caused overload. The mechanical team found that
the mechanical seal was damage and blocked cause of sealing fluid piping obstruction.
A second issue had been detected by exploitation team after 06-p-531-B installation
and running with the second pump 06-p-531-C the pump C tripped.
After performance test had done by mechanical team in April 25 2023 in order to define
the failure origin.
2. Involved Teams
This work has been done by a combination of different teams including:
3. Procedure description
We have performed the performance test according the test method statement -NFPA 20
water pump performance test by following steps:
- Start the water pump via manual start button.
- Open the test line to re-circulate the water back into the domestic water storage tank.
- By throttling the test line isolation valve, throttle the pump flow rate to the points
constructor test:
• 0 ton/day: Pump duty point.
• 248.64 ton/day: Pump duty point.
4. Pump Characteristics
• Capacity normal: 30m3/h
• Suction Pressure max/Rated: 1.78---0.85 bar
• Discharge Pressure: 16.90
• Diff.Head: 169m NPSHA: 7.1m
• Voltage: 400 V
• Impeller Diameter: 341 Max
• Rated Power: 40,7kw
• Efficiency: 37%

Based on the performance test results and the manufacturer's data sheet, some
observations and conclusions can be made:
• The pressure head at different flow rates for the actual test is lower than the
manufacturer's data sheet. This indicates that the pump 06-P-531-C may be
experiencing some issues with its hydraulic performance.
• The power consumption for the actual test of the 06-P-531-B is within the range
specified by the manufacturer's data sheet. This could indicate that the pump's
mechanical components are working efficiently.
• The pressure heads at different flow rate for the 06-P-531-B Pump test is Higher than
that of the 06-P-531-C. This could indicate that the pump B is working more
efficiently than the C.
• Possible failures depending on API 610 for pump 06-P-531-C can include, it can cause
problems such as cavitation, which can damage the pump and reduce its efficiency.
5. Recommandation:
• Clean the 06-p-531-C pump volute in order to rise its performance.
• Develop a maintenance plan for the pumps that includes regular inspection, cleaning,
and lubrication, as well as periodic testing and performance monitoring. This plan
should be based on the manufacturer's recommendations.
