❖ The Roman Republic was established in 509 BCE after the
overthrow of the last Roman king, Tarquin the Proud.
❖ According to roman legend, in 509 bc the last king of
rome, lucius tarquinius superbus, was overthrown after his
son raped a roman noblewoman named lucretia.
❖ Lucius junius brutus, a roman aristocrat, led the revolt.
The revolt may have also been motivated by an attempt
by the aristocracy and the senate to regain lost power.
❖ During this time to 338BCE, Rome expanded its territory
through conquest and colonization.

3. CONSTITUTIONAL SYSTEM OF REPUBLICAN ROME
4. The Fall of the
Roman Republic
❖ In the late 2nd century BCE, the Roman Republic faced
growing social unrest and political instability. The Gracchi
brothers, Tiberius and Gaius, were prominent politicians who
sought to address these issues by advocating for land reform
and other measures to benefit the common people.

❖ Their efforts were met with resistance from the Senate and
other members of the ruling elite, and both brothers were
eventually killed. Their deaths marked a turning point in
Roman politics, as violence and civil unrest became more
common and the Republic began to unravel.
